Cinco de Mayo is primarily a holiday in the state of Puebla, where Mexican militias under Gen. Zaragosa Seguin, defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla, 1862.
It temporarily stopped the French takeover, but additional troops were sent and the French installed Maxmilian as ruler. The French were expelled in 1867 and Maxmilian executed.

It has become an important celebration in several American cities with large Mexican immigrant populations, and along the border.

Commercial interests are often blamed for the spread of the holiday.

Why would Mexican Jews care? Cinco de Mayo is primarily a US holiday, anyway. Mexicans celebrate their Independence Day in September. Let the party in the New York barrios shtetals role!

My only contact with kosher alcoholic products was with Mogen David wine, and all of the jokes about it. As I remember my one drink of that product, it was terrible.

I attended a Jewish wedding, but those involved were not orthodox, and that French bubbly stuff was consumed by the- well, a lot of it was drunk.

133 bottles? - no problem for a couple of (exceptional) Mexicans I've known, although it might take more than one day. The article did mention a "pre-release" for Passover, as well as the main distribution for Cinco de Maya.

Not to suggest a generalization, but few of the Mexicans I've known have seemed to ever drink alone - although they might do it hidden at home. "Community activities" seem more common than for some other cultures, and sharing is expected(?). It probably can't be assumed that everybody at the Cinco de Maya party would need the kosher stuff, but everybody would probably help.

I've had fewer contacts with "kosher" jews, but most of the ones I've known gave little evidence of drinking at all. They may also have been "exceptional." (?)

According to national census of 2000, there are approx. 45000 Jews in Mexico.

Silver is producing half a million cases (12/case =6 million bottles).
If sold only in Mexico, each Mexican Jew would have to consume more than 133 bottles. Whee!

There is, in fact, a significant Jewish population in Mexico. I don't know how many of them keep kosher AND drink tequila, or even celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

The product will remain largely a New York item.
In 2001, the Jewish population of New York City was 1.97 million, according to demographics for the City. Almost one million were Ashkenazic.
The birth rate for Orthodox, Hasidic Jews in NYC is high, that of the majority 'non-observant' Jews is low.

The demand for kosher thus is on an increasing curve. Martin Silver has seen the future and is moving to profit from it.

A huge increase in margarita drinkers among the Jewish population, if they have a kosher product, will make his fortune.

I suppose every culture has it's own economic traditions(?). I'm just not that familiar with ones I can put in context with "kosher" takilya.

And what kind of knife do you use to perform a kosher kill on an agave? Can you still peel 'taters with it?

Strangely, none of my Jewish friends have expressed a need for this; but perhaps "Mexican Jews" are a target market? I haven't known many whom I would identify as part of this group.

No intent to offend anyone; but it seems a little "over the top" even for what's obviously a "marketing move." Perhaps tequila is popular in places of which I haven't been aware. Do we have "kosher" liquors of other kinds? And, for those who respect other kosher products just for the quality, do they taste better?
