Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Rapparee Date: 26 Feb 10 - 12:21 PM Yeah, the Library went through a bunch of trouble and got guys a gig at local eatery/drinkery last August. The first (he knows who he is) had to compete with TRAINS singing on an outside deck -- I went and got him a small sound system we have. The second was stiffed on food, drink, and a half the fee (we picked that up). We won't be doing things there again -- the manager's a jerk. |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Feb 10 - 12:14 PM It's like a lot of bars, good when it gets going it, and the owner is behind the bar most nights. Then when it gets popular, he/she needs to get staff in, and we all know about the problems can arise with unsuitable staff. It's even worse when a manager is put in, and neither the customers or the staff can get along with him/her. |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Midchuck Date: 26 Feb 10 - 10:31 AM You Brits don't know how lucky you are to have bars where people get together to do folk music, at all. Damn coffeehouses anyway. I love coffee, but everything in its place. Peter |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Rapparee Date: 26 Feb 10 - 09:36 AM I just leave, quietly if possible. I don't want to hurt anyone. |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 26 Feb 10 - 04:56 AM I've heard the BBC Bar is very good, David. The 'locals' kicked out those they deemed 'troublemakers' a long while back. The strange thing is, their bar has now become so achingly boring that hardly anyone uses it anymore. And what is even stranger, is that so many of them have moved to the bar down the road, where the troublemakers went...to er....ask if the troublemakers in that bar could also be kicked out... Kinda weird, huh? ;0) |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 26 Feb 10 - 04:04 AM I think you are right guys - It will all come out in the wash. I am not going to be pushed out by troublemakers but I am going to spend more time upstairs in the chill out zone:-) Until someone asks 'what is folk music', as I said on another thread! Never entered a bar, Bruce? You're missing a lot of good music:-P DeG |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Beer Date: 25 Feb 10 - 09:22 PM I use to bar hop two nights a week then it was one. Now I'm old and gray and still want to do it but to damn expensive. How do the young one do it. In reference to trouble in bars, I just leave. Never went to one to cause trouble and when trouble makers came by I just went to a different one. But that was easy if you live in walking distance to down town Montreal where every second door is a bar. Beer (adrien) |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: gnu Date: 25 Feb 10 - 07:14 PM Hmmmm... I wonder where this thread might go? Me... south... I am tired of it. Animosity from the nicest peeps. Including my irritability once in a while... >;-) Maybe it's the winter?... seems to be the trend over the last ten years here. Better to have never posted to a thread than to have been trolled at all. And, no, Dave... I am not calling you a troll. We are cool. |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 25 Feb 10 - 06:19 PM As I recall, the whole thing was a complete shambles Ebbie, but as always, it all came out right in the end. Don T. |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Ebbie Date: 25 Feb 10 - 06:07 PM I suspect that el Gnomo is using an analogy. I agree, DavideG, that I don't want that to happen here but I'm not too worried about it. I remember a few years back when I found myself embroiled in a most unpleasant and ongoing brouhaha here, to the point where I seriously considered leaving entirely. The situation ended eventually with abject apologies all around and the departure of one of us. (And no, I am not speaking of the Gibson) |

Subject: RE: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Georgiansilver Date: 25 Feb 10 - 05:58 PM Have seen the scenario a few times where a Folk Club regularly meets at a pub.... and have a separate room..maybe between 20-30 Folkies. They down copius amounts of yellow liquid at great cost, swelling the pubs coffers maybe one night a fortnight, much to the landlords delight........Landlord leaves..... New Landlord arrives with new ideas...Folk Club told no longer wanted........ pub fails!!!!!!. |

Subject: BS: This bar is no fun any more... From: Dave the Gnome Date: 25 Feb 10 - 05:37 PM You know, when you know a great bar to go? Good beer, good music, good people. Then someone comes in that is a loud mouth. They only goes there to cause trouble. A few people start to shout them down but that only makes matters worse. The barman comes over and tell you not to cause trouble, but you know that unless you do something it will get out of hand. It happened to our folk club once. When we were at the Football in Swinton and we regularly filled the room. You could not get any more in. But they got a new landlord. An organist came in, made a lot of noise, got the landlord on his side and, eventualy, they told us we had to move. I went in the same pub three weeks later and it was empty but for a bloke playing 'guess your own name' in the corner and a woman asleep on the table. Hope it never happens here... DeG |
