Subject: RE: Three Jolly Coachmen From: Curt D Date: 15 Aug 99 - 04:01 PM I posted the question after a recent visit to Colonial Williamsburg, VA. While dining in Shields Tavern I requested the song. The minstrel, before breaking into the tune said, "I will sing the original version, not the Kingston Trio knock-off." His version was much slower than the Trio's and it did not mention the "Three Jolly Coachmen" but did finish with the final verses about the "maid who steals a kiss". Unfortuneately, I forgot to ask him what the name of his tune was. Thanks for your info. |

Subject: RE: Three Jolly Coachmen From: dick greenhaus Date: 13 Aug 99 - 09:08 PM As I recall, he didn't update a damn thing; just copyrighted an existing drinking song. The same tune was used in the 1860s for Farewell to Grog, and it's a lot older than that. |
