Subject: RE: Sing for Spaw 31 12 2010 at noon and/or midnight From: katlaughing Date: 10 Jan 11 - 02:30 PM Please see the new thread about Catspaw. Karen mentioned that the Sing really helped. I told her we would do it again. Here's what I posted to the new thread: Please continue to do what you can. Karen said the Sing really helped and I told her we'd do it, again. I'll re-up that thread..maybe we could just do it at noon or midnight, whatever is best for each person, with him in mind, every day if possible. Thanks, folks. |
Subject: RE: Sing for Spaw 31 12 2010 at noon and/or midnight From: Ebbie Date: 01 Jan 11 - 04:23 PM At midnight East Coast time I told the music group about Spaw and his sterling qualities and asked for some Dylan songs. We sang You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Lay Down Your Weary Tune and our local bluesman came up with a non sequitur, if I ever heard one. He sang: She takes just like a woman, yes, she does She makes love just like a woman, yes, she does And she aches just like a woman But she breaks just like a little girl. It was raining from the first And I was dying there of thirst So I came in here And your long-time curse hurts But what's worse Is this pain in here I can't stay in here Ain't it clear that-- I just can't fit Yes, I believe it's time for us to quit When we meet again Introduced as friends Please don't let on that you knew me when I was hungry and it was your world. Ah, you fake just like a woman, yes, you do You make love just like a woman, yes, you do Then you ache just like a woman But you break just like a little girl. But at least, Spaw, it was all sung in your honor. |

Subject: RE: Sing for Spaw 31 12 2010 at noon and/or midnight From: Lonesome EJ Date: 31 Dec 10 - 03:10 PM I was in the shower when I realized it was time for the Spaw song. On the spur of the moment, I chose a Patrick Sky accapella tune which, Sky being a favorite of Pat's, I felt was appropriate. Radcliffe Highway As I was a-walking along Radcliffe Highway the Women's Liberation come a-beatin' their drum I was tested, and arrested, and before I did know stood accused of Chauvinism and me balls had to go Maybe not the joy and happiness song I might have sung for someone else, but this is old Catspaw after all. |

Had to start Aroon over after I stopped laughing. |

Subject: RE: Sing for Spaw 31 12 2010 at noon and/or midnight From: ClaireBear Date: 31 Dec 10 - 11:00 AM I got started at midnight last night, mudtime, just in case that's what you meant (always hard to tel what day it is, with midnight) -- and anyway practice was a good thing; I hadn't sung my two Dylan pieces "If Today Were Not an Endless Highway" and "Tambourine Man" in years. Will do them again at noon. That's 9am my time, though, so I'll have to fight with my husband who always wants to listen to "Writers' Almanac" at that time. Then, tonight, I'll be in a session with my band -- we'll get something seriously big going then! |

Subject: RE: Sing for Spaw 31 12 2010 at noon and/or midnight From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 31 Dec 10 - 09:08 AM I'll be singing for Spaw at noon today. I don't really know Bob Dylan that well, so I'll sing whatever I'm led to sing. Thank you, Kat for organizing this ("organizing" may be too strong a word: it's more like herding cats!). I'm with Jeri on this- it's fine to keep it light-hearted, up to a point, but Catspaw has meant so much to so many of us here, I'm feeling a little more, well, subdued. I'm saving up my energy to pour it out in song in just a few hours! Yay, Spaw! |

Subject: RE: Sing for Spaw 31 12 2010 at noon and/or midnight From: Hollowfox Date: 31 Dec 10 - 12:14 AM This is a grand scheme, and I'm planning to sing fro Spaw both at noon and midnight. It seems to me that the act of singing will concentrate the juju, rather than the lyrics. I haven't sung nay Dylan in years, so my attempt would be more than a bit half-assed. I see our diversity as a strong point, seeing as we won't all be in the same room. |

Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: katlaughing Date: 30 Dec 10 - 08:40 PM How about we each sing whatever song we want and set a general time as I said before: Actually, I think whatever anyone wants to sing is fine, but I would like to have a set time...just think of all that energy going to him in one concentrated burst of light, ya know? |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: Bobert Date: 30 Dec 10 - 08:31 PM I think it's a great idea but gettin' a bunch of folkies to agree on anything is like herding cats... Me??? There's a song by Dan Hicks & the Hot Nuts where there are in the middle of the song when Dan stops the song and asks one of his band mates "Did you fire that shot?' and the band mate says... ..."Yeah I fired it" to which Dan responds... ..."I thought you *fard it*".... Yeah, I can't remember the rest of the song right off hand but that's gotta be the Spawzer-get-well song... Plus, beat's "Puff the Magic Dragon" which next to Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" is the suckiest song ever written... Might of fact, I think someone oughtta just combine the two songs and have the dragon eat Honey... Yeah, that works fir me... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: katlaughing Date: 30 Dec 10 - 08:25 PM My apologies, Jeri. I know we're all ragged. Bobad's is fine. |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: Jeri Date: 30 Dec 10 - 08:04 PM Here's a YouTube of a guy ("TorontoLarrivee")singing New Morning. Kat, I hope what I said came across the way I meant it. It's an emotional time, and I don't know if there's any song that would matter that wouldn't make a person leak a little. There were several Dylan songs I listened to that got to me. Frankly, there were none that didn't unless they were angry ones. I'm personally getting a bit tired of the silliness. Once in a while, it's funny. All the time and it loses its "charm". When it stops being about our friend and starts being about "Hey! Look at ME! Ain't I cute!" it feels opportunistic and just plain wrong. We all may be a bit ragged. I'm ok with bobad's suggestion. Just gotta learn the tune. |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: bobad Date: 30 Dec 10 - 07:41 PM This is, IMHO, an uplifting Dylan tune: New Morning Can't you hear that rooster crowin'? Rabbit runnin' down across the road Underneath the bridge where the water flowed through So happy just to see you smile Underneath the sky of blue On this new morning, new morning On this new morning with you Can't you hear that motor turnin'? Automobile comin' into style Comin' down the road for a country mile or two So happy just to see you smile Underneath the sky of blue On this new morning, new morning On this new morning with you The night passed away so quickly It always does when you're with me Can't you feel that sun a-shinin'? Groundhog runnin' by the country stream This must be the day that all of my dreams come true So happy just to be alive Underneath the sky of blue On this new morning, new morning On this new morning with you So happy just to be alive Underneath the sky of blue On this new morning, new morning On this new morning with you New morning . . . |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: Jeri Date: 30 Dec 10 - 07:32 PM Kat, I think everything might be sad to you. It's somebody telling somebody else how much they're appreciated. It doesn't sound sad to me. What do YOU want to sing? |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: katlaughing Date: 30 Dec 10 - 06:47 PM But it was to be a concerted effort, Marigold! LOL..Actually, I think whatever anyone wants to sing is fine, but I would like to have a set time...just think of all that energy going to him in one concentrated burst of light, ya know? So, how about noon, Mudcat/Spaw time tomorrow. Or are any of you game for midnight Spaw/Mudcat time? Let's decide and I'll put it in the title. And, while I love If Not For You, even the title of it is sad! Sheesh, people, work with me, here, please?!**BG** |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: SINSULL Date: 30 Dec 10 - 05:18 PM Honey with vibratto - very classy. How about we each sing our own song? I am about to watch the Songcatcher and expect to have a few on hand. Then the review... |
Subject: Lyr Add: If Not For You From: Jeri Date: 30 Dec 10 - 04:51 PM Thanks Alan. The time I'm most likely to not think of anything is when I'm trying. If Not for You gets my vote so far, because I think it can apply to the whole family. We can make jokes here until some folks wanna slap us, but a love song is appropriate, I b'lieve. IF NOT FOR YOU, Bob Dylan © 1970,1985 Big Sky Music If not for you, Babe, I couldn't find the door, Couldn't even see the floor, I'd be sad and blue, If not for you. If not for you, Babe, I'd lay awake all night, Wait for the mornin' light To shine in through, But it would not be new, If not for you. If not for you My sky would fall, Rain would gather too. Without your love I'd be nowhere at all, I'd be lost if not for you, And you know it's true. If not for you My sky would fall, Rain would gather too. Without your love I'd be nowhere at all, Oh! what would I do If not for you. If not for you, Winter would have no spring, Couldn't hear the robin sing, I just wouldn't have a clue, Anyway it wouldn't ring true, If not for you. |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: alanabit Date: 30 Dec 10 - 04:31 PM I can think of a few really joyful Dylan songs. "New Morning", "If Not For You" and "Buckets of Rain" come to mind. |

Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: katlaughing Date: 30 Dec 10 - 02:00 PM So what time and day? Shall we do it tomorrow to bring him into the new year? I know folks are already there, or near enough, in Australia and Guam. Maybe we should just do it at noon, Spaw/Mudcat time and everyone jump in if they are awake and able? And, which song, Jeri? Ebbie's suggestion or "Honey?":-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: Jeri Date: 30 Dec 10 - 01:51 PM I like that Ebbie. Every Dylan song I can come up with is tear-inspiring or pissed off. I say we bag it and sing "Honey". |

Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: Ebbie Date: 30 Dec 10 - 01:36 PM Dylan has written on such a vast variety of subjects I'll bet we'll come up with just the right one. (In my head the lyrics of a song keeps repeating: It's a Small World after all. lol |
Subject: RE: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: katlaughing Date: 30 Dec 10 - 12:57 PM That might be his fav. Jeri, but I couldn't make it through it without using up a whole box of tissues!**bg** Throughout all of this, he's been very concerned about being able to have Karen nearby. He had a nightmare/hallucination at one point in which he kept looking for her and hearing her but couldn't find her. So maybe something about staying connected? Subject: BS: Set Time for a Concerted Sing for Spaw? From: katlaughing Date: 30 Dec 10 - 11:23 AM How about we agree to "meet" at a specific time/s when we all sing the same song or something to concentrate our attention on Spaw? I know we have so many different time zones, but maybe we could figure out a not too awful middle of the night time for too many. I was talking about singing up the roof of maeve's new house, like a barn-raising, and wondered why not gather for Spaw. Please let me know what you think. I just spoke with Karen who thinks it would be neat. When I asked her about any particular song, she said for him a fav. would have to be by Bob Dylan. So, how about some suggestions? Thanks, kat |
