It was fairly common once to run vehicles on 'producer gas.' Usually between 1939 and 1945, in England. They began with something organic and dried it, then heated it (in the car) to produce gas. I've seen one running on chicken-shit. It was hard to start.
I've also seen an article on a guy who was using newspaper as fuel. Must have been the NotW.

The Irish National Trust (An Taisce)had a project within their 'Kulyana' project to build anaerobic digesters as community schemes but a local one near where I live in Co.Clare didn't seem to get off the ground because some local individuals seemed to want to develop it as a money making thing and so far NOTHING has happened - a great pity!
