Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 18 Sep 11 - 06:48 PM I remember when we stopped doing Sunday collections. The next week we had Sunday collections as it was the run-up to Christmas! The last collection used to be about 21:30 but now is 19:30 - to make sure that all the collections go out on the 22:00 despatch. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: GUEST,Ebbie Date: 18 Sep 11 - 03:14 PM In the USA they are talking about going to five-day delivery but as far as I know, we all still get six days. Here in Juneau, the post office *counter* is closed on Saturdays but we can knock on a closed back door and pick up packages that have arrived since the day before. At Christmas US post offices are open longer hours and on April 15, tax return day, ours are open until midnight. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: MikeL2 Date: 18 Sep 11 - 01:16 PM hi It is true that the Royal Mail delivery service has gone from bad to worse recently. Strangely though, in contrast to others here we do still have a Saturday delivery and it is in the early morning. I say this because we seldom receive any mail before lunch and only this week we have twice received mail after 4pm !! We don't seem to get any mail on a Friday but as I said above it usually turns up early on Saturday morning. Also there are no collections of mail in this area on Sundays. Not even if you take it to the sorting office or the area Head Office. As for telephone contact - forget it !!! Bah Cheers MikeL2 |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 18 Sep 11 - 06:52 AM Ah. I would have taken our between 10:00 and 11:30 am as being a normal first delivery here. When I lived in a small village in N Wales, 10:00am to about 2:00pm was normal. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: GUEST,PeterC Date: 18 Sep 11 - 06:44 AM I hadn't realised that the only daily delivery was officially the second delivery either. In that they no longer attempt a pre 9am delivery (in predominantly residential areas anyway) I suppose it is in a sense. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: MGM·Lion Date: 18 Sep 11 - 06:40 AM Semantic/logistical/logical point ~~ If there is only one, can it be the second? Even if it occurs at about the time the second one used to? How about that then, Socrates? ~Michael~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 18 Sep 11 - 06:11 AM I hadn't realised two deliveries had stopped. I just assumed that we (again) were living in a rural area that only got one. I hadn't realised that the only daily delivery was officially the second delivery either. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: GUEST,Ebbie Date: 18 Sep 11 - 02:52 AM When I was a kid, 60 or so years ago, townspeople and businesses got two deliveries of mail a day. We didn't- we were out in the country. Here in Juneau, Alaska, their number is in the book and we can phone the post office, although it goes to the post office in the 'valley' not the one downtown. A human being answers, usually the manager. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: Dave MacKenzie Date: 17 Sep 11 - 06:30 PM It's a few years since the first delivery was abolished, but you should still get a second delivery six days a week. The last time I looked, the DO's phone number was on the 739 that you get left if they can't deliver. The card will also show the opening hours of your DO's public counter - if you go outwith these hours, even if there's anybody there, they're unlikely to have access to your mail. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 17 Sep 11 - 06:19 PM We've not had a second weekday delivery in the 10 years I've lived here but we are supposed to get a Saturday delivery. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: GUEST,PeterC Date: 17 Sep 11 - 06:07 PM When you get a card telling you that you need to collect something the number will be on it (unless they have changed things since I last had to pick something up). I can't say that I have ever needed to know the number otherwise. @Jon - Saturday delivery? That vanished at the same time as the second weekday delivery where I live. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: Jim Dixon Date: 17 Sep 11 - 05:28 PM The same kind of thing is going on in the US. If you look in the local phone book, there is a phone number published there, but it actually connects with a faraway call center, where they are prepared to give you general information about postal regulations and procedures, but nothing specific about your local area, except maybe the hours the PO is open. Of course the local PO has phones, but they don't publish those numbers. In my last job, I worked in the mail room of a university. Every morning a postal delivery truck dropped off a load of mail at our office (which we then delivered to the various departments), and every afternoon they picked up a load of outgoing mail. Of course we knew the numbers of our local PO so we could coordinate deliveries. You might try this: Try to guess which company or organization in your area sends and receives the largest volume of mail. Call them and ask for their mail room. Then ask if they can give you the number of the local PO. But don't bother the postal employees with trivia. Don't ask when your package will arrive because they don't know. And be patient with them, because they aren't used to receiving calls from the public on this phone. If they help you, thank them sincerely. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: GUEST,Jon Date: 17 Sep 11 - 05:04 PM I wish I knew what happens with our Saturday delivery. We rarely seem to get anything and even if we do, I never seem to get any package I'm waiting for. With any of the companies I use that ship same day by Royal Mail, if I order Mon-Thu, I'm reasonably sure of the goods arriving next day but if I order Fri, a package won't arrive till Mon. Ordered something this Fri am, 8mm x 0.75 taps and die and a couple of 7.2mm drill bits - just a small Mail Lite bag. |

Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: Wolfhound person Date: 17 Sep 11 - 08:20 AM I just had to deal with a jobsworth on the front desk at our sorting office, and there is a "central hub" phone line which is supposed to be the contact for everything.....as you say, it's a menu etc. And they wonder why they're losing customers? Subject: RE: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: Bonzo3legs Date: 17 Sep 11 - 06:42 AM Ours isn't, and of course the "customer services" number gets you into a computer loop where you never get through to a human! |

Subject: BS: Phoning local mail delivery office?? From: Bonzo3legs Date: 17 Sep 11 - 06:24 AM Does anyone know how to get the phone number of the local mail delivery office in the UK? The Royal Mail website is totally lacking in this information. |
