The deciding factor in the 2012 election will be how many of the people who voted for Obama in 2008 don't vote at all in 2012. Who the Republicans nominate is irrelevant. He'll receive about the same number of votes as John MCain did in 2008. But if Obama's 2008 supporters stay home in large enough droves, that'll be enough.

Despite the accomplishments of the Obama administration during the last three and a half years, if enough folks - disenchanted with the "Yes We Can" hopefulness (e.g., the LGBT community; the Occupiers; the unemployed; recent college grads who have outstanding loans but can't find a job; health care advocates who think ObamaCare didn't go far enough) that got Obama elected in the first place - decide to stay home or cast a protest vote for someone like Ron Paul, it may be enough for Romney to squeeze out a victory.

If the Republicans DO win, they will have to endure, along with the rest of us, 4 years of Romney..... and most never wanted Romney in the first place. They know Romney is likely to embarrass the party at least as much as GWB did....(and most of the rest of the world would rather have Obama)

I see this last 2 years of the "Parade of Clowns" as evidence that the GOP did not believe they were likely to beat Obama, and were letting the lunatic fringe battle it out. IF they manage to win, I'll bet there are serious discussions as to how to manage Romney.

In any case, I suspect there are a couple dozen half-sane Republicans making plans for 2016.

I, too, am somewhat disenchated with Obama, but I think he's basically okay. What he needs to do is read a lot about FDR, the New Deal and such--and take a lot of vitamins!

It doesn't really matter, since O. is assured of a win in Vermont, and we're a winner-take-all state on electoral votes.

I'd say if Scott Walker goes down then the billion or so $$$ that the Republican Super PAC's will throw out there to defeat Obama won't work...

I'm still waiting to see Romney's birth certificate. How do we know he isn't a Muslim from Kenya? Or the Antichrist for that matter? Since he comes from one of those polygamous communes is Mexico he could be related to anybody. Even a socialist.

We think it's simpler than that. The smarter republicans (oxymoron?) like Jeb Bush, Mitch Daniels, Chris Christie and Marco Rubio know the republicans can't win the 2012 presidential election so they stayed out of the race and are waiting for 2016 when there will be no incumbent. That leaves the detritus that actually believes they can win.

I think they'd love to win, but hope to the bottom of my toes that they can't field anybody electable, which is wonderful. Maybe people *are* coming to their senses.

Yes, from the outside, the Republican candidates have been remarkably consistent in being apparently from other planets (although in different ways each time). But the "why?" of that is harder to synthesise. The idea that any politicians could be sagacious enough to elect for deferred gratification seems improbable.

Now that is an interesting idea(Kind of the way I felt in the 2008 election).

Not considering the beliefs that some Catters have concerning the BIG PICTURE that US political outcomes are orchestrated and preordained by the men behind the curtain, do you think that may be the reason for the weak GOP candidate field? In my opinion, the lineup was farcical with just a couple of exceptions.
