I agree, Stringsinger. Hell, it works the same way when the US is demonized by Islam. Leaders KNOW this stuff works. Hence, when one pulls the trigger one is killing a gook or a slant or a rag head and not a father or son. Takes the 'edge' off as it were.

The idea behind basic training in the military is to reinforce the concept of hating the enemy, dehumanizing them to facilitate the job of killing them easier.

It is perfectly reasonable that the army would attempt to discredit Islam in order
to motivate the soldiers to destroy it without thinking about the implications of such an action.

One of the ways they do this is to use religion as a tool to facilitate this.

"Onward Christian Soldiers"

As long as this pattern of "re-education" is noticed and understood, there can be alternatives.

1. Create empathy in the military for the culture they are attempting to destroy.
2. As policing methods become more militarized, a division between policing and       warring need to be separated.
3. Respect the need for negotiations and diplomacy over killing and carnage.
4. Bring more peace workers in to the "enemy" country or forces to offset
the military authoritarian mindset, not military contractors who are attempting to
profit financially from a volatile situation.
5. Remember "separation of church and state" and defang the religious dogma used as a war tool.

No indication that all or even any of the other senior officers who must surely have known all about this for a year have been suspended prior to being court martialled.

It did seem to link not quite seamlessly with the book I've been reading about the anti-science activities fo some school boards. Scarey stuff.

Rapparee, I had one of those, nearly sang it one Christmas service. A bit less apocalyptic, though.

You know, when the Trinity Shot was touched off in July, 1945, there was some concern that it would ignite the atmosphere. Woulda ended WW2, the Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Israel, recessions, depressions, the Civil Rights Movement, Northern Ireland, Southern Ireland -- just all sorts of things.

Niner, I too had those classes. In the Army they told us that if we saw a nuclear explosion we were to dig a hole, cover it with our ponchos, crawl in and sit tight and the fallout wouldn't get us. I suspect that the tooth fairy would come to wrap our bodies in the ponchos and fill in the hole.

As a btw, if you ever ARE attacked by nuclear weapons, here's what to do.

1) Close the curtains on all windows in the house
2) Turn off all vents to outside air
3) Take the sturdiest chair and place it behind the strongest wall
4) Sit on the chair
5) Place a small pillow on your lap
6) Lean forward as far as you are able
7) Kiss your arse goodbye

I didn't say it was right, Eliza. Just that a course member DID blow the whistle.

Hell, I sat through classes on what to do if/when we were attacked with nuclear weapons. I was in the classes with people who thought all the bullshit the army was giving out really meant something. The fact I sat through the classes does NOT mean I agreed with what we were being told.

Guest 999, the last paragraph of the article clearly states that the commanders, captains and colonels sat through the year-long course and saw no reason to complain, until someone did only a month ago.

Don't forget, those "commanders, captains and colonels" are products of the American educational system. (Or, to be fair, the American anti-education ethos, which derides all liberal arts, including history, literature, philosophy, and religious studies.) No wonder they didn't notice anything funny.

If this is so, I too am appalled. My husband is a Muslim. You can imagine our reaction to such wicked propoganda. As the article says, why didn't anyone on the course blow the whistle? Could it be because they too subscribe to this mindset? In UK this might have sparked riots and civil unrest all over the country by deeply offended and enraged Muslims. Such bigotry and hatred fuels wars and deaths. I feel very strongly about this, it's outrageous.
