More or less, there are five or six spaces available to moderators for "wiggle room." It gives us a little space in case something needs to be added for clarification. If you really need something added in those six spaces, ask a moderator - but don't do it as a matter of habit, please.

You get down on your (virtual) knees and grovel at the foot of one of the esteemed mudelves.

Providing you utter the correct incantations and fondle the entrails of a recently slaughtered chicken, they might just (only might) apply the aforesaid dialogue box stretchers.

Of course if you make just a tiny error in the incantation or the conformation of the entrails of the said slaughtered chicken are not propitious, then the aforementioned stretchers are liable to be applied to certain painful parts of your anatomy so making such requests is fraught with danger.

Max issues all moderators a pair of pneumatically operated dialogue box stretchers. Mods can use them to make thread titles longer, but you and I can't. Using the stretchers is a potentially dangerous operation, and mods must take a special training course. If used improperly, they can slip, causing the dialogue box to snap shut, which would make the thread title to look like this: "|".

No. I think that the additions are intended to clarify the thread title. E.g., Healing thoughts & prayers please (Nigel Paterson) and BS: President Romney (prediction only), which did not originally have the parenthetical addition.

I think you could just eliminate vowels. This thread would become "Hw d w gt lngr thrd ttls?????" -- or do that and cram it all together as well: "Hwdwgtlngrthrdttls?????".

Okay, note the length of the title of this thread. That was the longest that I could make it, including all those question marks, because the dialogue box for the thread title wouldn't hold any more letters and spaces.

And yet I see thread titles here and there on the forum page which are longer than that!

How are they doing it? What is the secret?
