Another early album worth a listen was "Ashes and Diamonds". I don't know what mdae it into the compilations. |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: GUEST,Azoic Date: 19 Aug 12 - 03:32 PM Is anyone interested in the upcoming June Tabor with Huw Warren and Iain Ballamy called "Quercus"?I ,for one, am chuffed to see this forthcoming. |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Claire M Date: 19 Aug 12 - 02:05 PM Hiya, Thanks. Don't think I will be starting though. I luv her + Oysterband, because it made me think "wow". I'm not going to say she's too depressing, because that's like buying a house in the middle of nowhere & saying it's too quiet. If I have to question whether something – anything in life, not just music – is right, it isn't. Maddy Prior's stuff isn't all lively either. If I'd been brought up with Tabor's voice rather than Prior's I'd probably feel differently |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Claire M Date: 12 Aug 12 - 03:40 PM Hiya, My favourite so far is '(When I was No But) Sweet 16'. |

Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Morris-ey Date: 12 Aug 12 - 12:33 PM Try "Anthology" which is a very good example of her primarily folk based singing. |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Morris-ey Date: 12 Aug 12 - 12:31 PM "probably because Oysterband remind me a lot of Steeleye Span." Insofaras they are nothing like Steeleye Span in any conceivable form? |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Musket Date: 12 Aug 12 - 12:02 PM Anybody wanting to buy a first album of her may wish to consider "Against the Streams." I bought it at a concert where she was singing mainly from that, as it was at the time her latest album. Stunning.... Especially Les Barker's (serious for once) song Turn of the Road. Since then, I have had the pleasure of meeting her when a band I was playing in was on the same stage at a festival and found her charming, nice and an all round wonderful person. I'm not normally that gushing about people and it can sound as if I were a bit star struck, but yes, she is a credit to the industry. (A sound engineer she has worked with told me they call her" One Take Tabor" as she does tend to get it right first time.) |

Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: GUEST,Guest Date: 11 Aug 12 - 09:31 PM Don't understand Dickies imput - perhaps it would be easier to assume it is in the wrong thread. Queen among the Heather for starters for me. |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Phil Edwards Date: 11 Aug 12 - 05:10 PM Richard - which album's that on? Her first, Airs and Graces, is well worth a listen - it has TBPWM (which I don't much like) but also the Plains of Waterloo, Waly Waly, Queen Among the Heather, Young Waters... |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Richard Bridge Date: 11 Aug 12 - 03:11 PM I think her standout song is Hughie Graeme |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Little Robyn Date: 11 Aug 12 - 01:29 PM You can find White Rabbit on youtube. Also lots of other songs to choose from. My favourites are Grey Funnel Line and The Band played Waltzing Matilda. Both are on Silly Sisters, I think, as well as No man's land. Robyn |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: The Sandman Date: 11 Aug 12 - 01:15 PM has she recorded little white bull yet? |
Subject: RE: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: GUEST,Azoic Date: 11 Aug 12 - 01:07 PM I would either recommend the 4cd box "Always" as an introduction to her music , or try to find a copy of the "Freedom And Rain" tour sampler .It has her version of 'White Rabbit". |
Subject: June Tabor – where to start ?? From: Claire M Date: 11 Aug 12 - 12:47 PM Hiya, I'd heard good things about her, so I watched her on Jools Holland, was fascinated & a bit scared by the 1st song she did, which means it was a good song. Bought 'Ragged Kingdom' on the strength of that, very glad I did – probably because Oysterband remind me a lot of Steeleye Span. June is good unaccompanied; I luv '(When I was No But) Sweet 16' Funnily enough, one track reminded me of Gary Moore, who I also luv) so picked up 'Freedom & Rain' too. Also like Silly Sisters. I much prefer the more trad, nastier sort of folk (with a bit of rock in it!) -- nothing fazes me when it comes to that –- so what's worth getting by her? |
