Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Helen Date: 02 Oct 16 - 02:34 PM Hi Donuel, I think using the term "lurking" started as a bit of an internet joke, like skulking in the background, listening and watching but not actively participating. "Skulking" is another good word, I think. Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Donuel Date: 02 Oct 16 - 10:36 AM I prefer listen to Lurk Lurking sounds like stalking. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Joe_F Date: 01 Oct 16 - 06:33 PM Does posting on rec.music.folk count as prehistoric participation in the Mudcat? |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Gervase Date: 01 Oct 16 - 05:18 PM September 99 was my first post as a member but I'd lurked for a while before then. There was a time when I'd spend several hours day on the Mudcat. Now, though, it's a fleeting visit every few weeks. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Helen Date: 01 Oct 16 - 03:58 PM BillD, I like that comment: "Mudcat is a fairly small % of my life in time, but a large % in importance" Thread #1 - just out of curiosity because I missed the Mudcat beginnings - but only by a few months Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Bill D Date: 01 Oct 16 - 11:46 AM thread on first posts "My 1st post was Nov. 13, 1996, in thread 129 (replying to request for lyrics to "San Antonio Rose").....first post AS Bill D was Jan 9, 1997, in thread 462.." I'm now 77, and Mudcat is a fairly small % of my life in time, but a large % in importance. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Donuel Date: 30 Sep 16 - 03:30 PM The Mudcat Redemption. On the surface it is about combating ignorance and promoting knowledge and intelligence but the inside has a rich consciousness gooey center. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Helen Date: 30 Sep 16 - 03:05 PM Yes Donuel, but Mudcat is more fun than prison, isn't it? :-) I agree, Acme. That's one of the key reasons that I keep coming back to Mudcat. Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Donuel Date: 30 Sep 16 - 10:38 AM 16 years! I've been here that long? 16 years is about the same as the sentence for 2nd degree murder. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Stilly River Sage Date: 30 Sep 16 - 10:30 AM Helen, you've illustrated one of the strengths of mudcat - some of these threads bring old songs to life like no one could have imagined, and often within minutes or hours. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Stu Date: 30 Sep 16 - 08:48 AM "...watching a cow moose do a piss dance at 50 feet from me while her boyfriend, ahhh, got ready to... " *spits out coffee* Yer wot? What on earth is a "piss dance"? |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Steve Shaw Date: 29 Sep 16 - 08:48 PM As I don't regard myself as a member of anything unless I'm actually posting or reading, I should think that this website has occupied about 0.000562% of my life. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Helen Date: 29 Sep 16 - 05:33 PM 3776 posts, but I am a woman of few words. I've read a lot of threads without posting to them. Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Helen Date: 29 Sep 16 - 05:27 PM Hi all, I first posted as a member in May 1997 but had been lurking before that for a while. Chorus: Let us go to the banks of the ocean 27-May-97 - 10:35 AM I had never heard of the song and held absolutely no hope of finding out the name of it. At 11.07 am, i.e. only 32 minutes later, there was the answer, posted by an unnamed guest. So I've been a member 19 years, which is 32% of my life. Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Steve Parkes Date: 29 Sep 16 - 04:58 PM January 1999 -- about 26%! |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: punkfolkrocker Date: 28 Sep 16 - 06:55 PM Thats the sort of crass jokes young blokes like me don't care about who we offend.. I'm only 57.. btw.. member since about 2003... When I was 16 i started training to be an accountant, I could do percentages quickly in my head... then in 1976.. punk rock and magic mushrooms... .. now somebody else needs to work it out for me..... 😬 |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Charmion Date: 28 Sep 16 - 06:49 PM I started posting here in 1998, by God. How time flies. |

Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Ed T Date: 28 Sep 16 - 10:54 AM 2008, came across the site when searching for stories of a colourful south USA politician, called Mudcat. Especially enjoyed the linked info, varied perspectives (I have learned from), interesting folks and humourful comments. Quite often, discussions stimulated me to learn more, a big plus. I also read most music posts, but dont have the music knowledge to contribute much. I have only been told to F-off a couple of times here, (a badge of honour, I suspect), as stirring things up can be interesting when times are boring (some if tge pms following such events are often interesting). I dont take offense by insults, deserved or otherwise. I just mostly like people and diversity (opinions and people) and learning from others, the crusty and the meek.. Only check in now annd then, and do miss some of the folks who dont anymore. Keep up the good work mods - it may come back on a better path. |

Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: gnu Date: 27 Sep 16 - 08:06 PM I can't really do the % thing because the 40512 posts do not include most of every October and November for quite a few years when I didn't post at all. I used to enjoy fall hiking through the fly infested bog country of Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada when there weren't any flies flitting. I spent weeks by myself without speaking to another human, save the odd time I had to venture to "civilization" to pick up essential supplies and do laundry. I miss those days and nights. Just me and the trees and the stars. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: bubblyrat Date: 27 Sep 16 - 02:31 PM Don't know when I first posted,to be honest . But it seems that Mudcat and I share the same birthday ; on October 1st it will be 20 and I shall be 69 . |

Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: CupOfTea Date: 27 Sep 16 - 10:21 AM I lurked for a very long time before joining, following lots of years of being addicted to the Digital Tradition. I had a copy of the DT on 3inch floppy discs - I think it took 5, back in the days when I was on AOL dialup - so somewhere in the 1990s First post with this name was 2008 - does that count as long term? Joanne in Cleveland |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Phil Cooper Date: 27 Sep 16 - 06:28 AM I have been here since the late 1990's not sure exactly when. Don't post as much, but check in all the time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 27 Sep 16 - 06:21 AM I like your reasoning, DMcG JennieG's first of 3029 posts was on May 3rd 2000! sandra (who used to work with statisticians & economists) |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: JennieG Date: 27 Sep 16 - 02:43 AM Seem to remember I joined round about May 2000, so 16 years out of you-don't-need-to-know-how-many. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: DMcG Date: 27 Sep 16 - 02:13 AM I'm a mathematician by trade and training, but we don't really do numbers, you know. You want a statistician for that. We rarely go beyond "Sounds about right". As in 14.5, that's about 15. 64? That's about 60. 15/60 is a quarter. Nigel says 23%? Sounds about right. |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 27 Sep 16 - 01:34 AM me - 14 years out of 64 = 9.6 hmmmm nigel - 14.5 years out of 62 = 23% We need a mathematician (hello? Guest Gerry?), or a https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120113003519AADziYg yahoo says 21.78! sandra (not a mathematician or even competent at using a calculator) |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Sep 16 - 01:27 AM I joined in January, 1997. That means I've been a Mudcatter for 29% of my life. By the way - Mudcat celebrates its 20th birthday October 1. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Long term member? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 26 Sep 16 - 01:08 PM Feb 2002 (as a member) so 14.5 years out of 62 = 23% It's strange that Sandra In Sydney has similar figures, but a much lower percentage. Maybe these things work differently down under. |
