Subject: Lyr Add: HILLS OF CONNEMARA
From: GUEST,Marian

Hi Daniel,

I know a song I perform with my own band it's called "The Hills of Connemara" Although the song doesn't contain anything about language, here are the lyrics:

CHORUS: Gather up the pots and the old tin cans
The mash, the corn, the barley and the bran.
Run like the devil from the excise man
Keep the smoke from rising, Barney.

Keep your eyes well peeled today
The excise men are on their way
Searching for the mountain tay
In the hills of Connemara. CHORUS

Swinging to the left, swinging to the right
The excise men will dance all night
Drinkin' up the tay till the broad daylight
In the hills of Connemara. CHORUS

A gallon for the butcher and a quart for John
And a bottle for poor old Father Tom
Just to help the poor old dear along
In the hills of Connemara. CHORUS

Stand your ground, for it's too late
The excise men are at the gate.
Glory be to Paddy, but they're drinkin' it straight
In the hills of Connemara. CHORUS 2 TIMES

Hope this may help you. If there are more questions about this song send an email to: Ireland@eurosport.com

Greetings, Marian

Is it the song about a man listening to a young girl singing in gaelic? mentions something about the connemara countryside as well, if my memory serves me correctly. If it is the song I am thinking of (and I haven't heard it since last year when I was in Clifden) I will listen out for it when I go back to Clifden again this Saturday.

Daniel, I've searched using Google for Connemara, "Nobody will understand", song, lyrics, and various combinations of the above, but have not come up with anything that sounds like your song, sorry.

I do however know a lot more about Chris de Burgh and Ruby Murray... and that someone has words for the Connemara Cradle Song which goes Angels are coming to watch o'er thy sheep... priceless!

Noreen

Hi out there! I´ve been to IReland alst week. One evening in a pub there was a lady singing a song about Ireland losing its native language. I onlyremember that there was a line like "Nobody will understand" that repeated(but I´m not sure). I asked her and she told me that the song is just called "Connemara", but she didn´t know who wrote or recorded it. Who can tell me something about it?
