Subject: RE: BS: How You Can Help in Mozambique From: wysiwyg Date: 17 Mar 00 - 03:50 PM It came out bitchy cuz I am today, sorry. Up all night with local house fire relief and organizational crap about it. But-- the whole point of Red Cross is humanitarian relief of suffering. It's the pioneer and still the gold standard. The whole front page of www.disasterrelief.org would follow with ongoing news of nonstop releif al around the world, it I weren't too tired to pretty up the pasting. The American Red Cross is one of the most proactive and generous supporters of worldwide disaster relief, and is often active in countries that have no Red Cross of their own. In my tiny, poor, rural county, our residents spontaneously supported faraway Kosovo to an amazing degree. One teen girl sent her entire $300 savings. We do pretty good work. Go see the site if you want. For a complete guided virtual tour of Red Cross' public website, message my personal page with your e-mail address and I will send the links I built for our newer Red Cross board members to get acquainted with our many services. Or don't-- no skin off my nose. In the meantime, if you can't help in Mozambique or wherever trouble is today, giving blood is an action that has potential you cannot envision. Alternatively, you can also make a difference by hugging a Red Cross disaster relief worker today. We are everywhere, 24 and 7, in your community. Oh, FUGGIT, I'll just write a story about the couple we helped today. And the quilts we passed along to them, one heart to another. Don't mind me, my Tavern nap was rudely interrupted. |

Subject: RE: BS: How You Can Help in Mozambique From: katlaughing Date: 17 Mar 00 - 03:36 PM I am sorry, Praise, if it seemed like a commercial. I didn't intend it that way. I just thought this was an easy and effective way of helping through the Internet. By all means, if Red Cross has info which is connected to how we can all help, please let us know. |

Subject: How You Can Help in Mozambique From: katlaughing Date: 17 Mar 00 - 03:20 PM Thought this was worth posting for those who are interested. It came from my long distance provider, Working Assets. "Working Assets is urgently asking everyone to support relief efforts in flood-ravaged Mozambique by visiting GiveForChange.com today at Giveforchange or, http://www.giveforchange.com/interact/promo.asp?promo=ldmozsubr, where you can help several relief organizations working feverishly in Mozambique at this very moment. In one week, more rain fell in the country of Mozambique than the average rainfall for two years. Over 500,000 people have been left homeless from the torrential rains and flooding, and countless more have been swept away by the rising waters. Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world, and suffered through 15 years of brutal civil war that ended only in 1992. It is also a highly indebted country and must spend $1 million a week on interest payments to foreign lenders. In order to meet these financial obligations, Mozambique has lost much of its capacity to respond to emergencies. Three GiveForChange.com organizations are currently working around the clock to assist with the crisis in Mozambique: Doctors Without Borders, Oxfam America and UNICEF. We urge you to help them in this important moment of great need. Here is what you can do: 1) Visit GiveForChange.com right now. Make the most generous donation you can possibly afford to support any one of these three groups working in Mozambique at this very moment. Donating money is the best way you can help. By giving money, these organizations can purchase the most appropriate and effective relief supplies - at the best possible prices. 2) On Thursday, March 9, Congress began a debate on the authorization of debt relief to poor countries, including Mozambique. If the U.S. refuses to fund debt relief, other countries will withhold promised funding as well, leaving Mozambique in even greater peril. Please e-mail your Senator today asking that debt relief be funded immediately. To e-mail your Senator, visit http://www.workingassets.com/mozambique/takeaction.html, where you will be able to locate your Senator's e-mail address and view and send a sample e-mail. As the floodwaters begin to recede in the coming days, a new crisis will arise - disease. Cholera has been an ongoing problem in Mozambique for years, and reports are just emerging of a new outbreak in the wake of this massive flooding. Additionally, the countryside of Mozambique is riddled with landmines from years of civil war. The rain is flushing these deadly mines from the earth and scattering them across the countryside. Your help is needed now - and will continue to be needed in the weeks ahead - long after the news crews stop covering the devastation. Please visit GiveForChange.com today, and please be as generous as you possibly can. Thank you for considering this urgent request. P.S. You do NOT have to be a Working Assets customer to visit and donate through GiveForChange.com" |
