Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Aug 00 - 06:47 PM Hi, Alice - I really enjoyed your singing. It's nice to finally have a chance to hear you. Your son sounded great, too. I was not able to play the MP3 files with Windows Media Player, the standard player that comes with Windows, even though I believe that player will play -Joe Offer- |

Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Jon Freeman Date: 10 Aug 00 - 01:12 PM Alice, given the choice, I would opt for the smaller Mp3 format (I am missing an Mp3 converter at the moment) but either are fine. I think where Real really scores is with the streaming which can be used to create a live broadcast or to allow a file to play without having to wait for a whole file to download but you need some kit to be able to do that. I have successfully managed to use my PC as a Real Server to "broadcast" a CD but with a 56K modem, its limit is one user and with an IP address that is allocated dynamically (changes each time I connect) and no means of DNS resolution (mapping a URL to an IP address), it is not practical. Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Gervase Date: 10 Aug 00 - 12:56 PM No, I definitely saw it twitch! As to the file format, I think MP3s are smaller, and most people seem to have some form of player; be it QuickTime, RealPlayer or whatever. |

Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Alice Date: 10 Aug 00 - 01:27 AM By the way, would it be better to make RealAudio files for music, or could most people hear the MP3 files at the link I posted? Which way works for the majority here? Alice |

Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Jon Freeman Date: 09 Aug 00 - 06:59 PM Alice and others, I really wish we could come up with a solution for PC and Mac users to be able to get together in something approaching real time and I do search approx once a month in the hope of finding a Hearme type answer. It is not a lot but I for one do keep looking. Jon (A PC user) |

Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Alice Date: 09 Aug 00 - 06:43 PM That's great, Gervase. I think this is the best way yet in all my trials and searching at this point in time for both Mac and PC to meet in sound at the Mudcat.
kat, the lyrics are in the DT, but the tune there is wrong and a few of the words are in error - "end" instead of "and" in a few places. I recorded it this morning without warming up, so maybe I'll do a whole verse sometime and post it. Alice |

Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Gervase Date: 09 Aug 00 - 03:26 PM Alice, a great find, and many thanks - a good tune and a lovely song. A neat site too - I'll take the minidisc player to the East End booze-up for Dick and Sue on Saturday night and if anything musical/outrageous materialises I'll MP3 it and post a link in the Cat. |

Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: katlaughing Date: 09 Aug 00 - 03:17 PM Wow, Alice! What a neat way to share files; it went very well. Ryan sounds really good on the mando, already, plus your backup was lovely. That is a great tune. First time I've had a chance to hear your voice and it is one of my favourite tunes, which I have on an instrumental tape, didn't know it had words! And, you have a beautiful voice, Alice, I admire you range! The only thing disappointing was it ended so quickly. Thanks, very much. I understand that Gervase is working on making his MAc work with HearMe and talks about it in another thread. I haven't looked at it but I hope it facilitates you and Ryan joinging in. Thanks, Alice, kat |

Subject: RE: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Alice Date: 09 Aug 00 - 12:01 PM There is an Irish song called the Foggy Dew that is different than the rebel song both in tune and lyrics. It begins "A wan cloud was drawn o'er the dim weeping dawn, as to Shannon's side I returned at last." I just sang that line and added a file to the previous link I provided labeled Donegal Mazurka. I am on the forum using the loki URL, so I can't get to the DT and see if the tune has been corrected, but I previously posted that the wrong tune was attached to those lyrics. The tune is very different than the rebel version, so if you are interested in hearing it (and me) the file is called wanfoggydew.mp3 at the previously posted link on driveway. Alice |

Subject: Driveway.com - sharing music files From: Alice Date: 09 Aug 00 - 10:36 AM Well, being of the Macintosh persuasion, I've not been on HearMe and it's been a little frustrating not being able to add sound to the sharing that goes on here. My Yamaha midi keyboard fried my system when I tried to connect it a year or so ago, but now I've found another way that allows me to record live instrument playing and voice files, too.
There is an MP3 conversion software called SoundJam and a recording program called SoundRecorder that allows me to record AIFF, or QuickTime, or wav files. I can then convert them to MP3 using SoundJam. By uploading to a shared folder at driveway.com, I can email the sound file to anyone who wants to hear it. So, this is a round about way, but I have done the first one as an experiment of my son playing Donegal Mazurka on the mandolin (he's 12, almost 13, and just learning mandolin). Send me a personal message with your email address if you want to hear the file. It's about 500k. Alice
