Someone gave him a sheep and within 6 months he had 100 acres of land, a herd of sheep and a tractor..........he was 12 at the time. Spaw |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - August 19, 2000 From: Peter T. Date: 19 Aug 00 - 10:54 AM "I think it is vital to grasp opportunity when it presents itself when young. I well remember the last time I was here in St. Louis, it must be 40 years ago now when I was a mere stripling, and I was offered for 10 dollars what was then 8 acres of fields in what is now the centre of this fine bustling city. 10 dollars! Now worth in the countless thousands and millions! Many's the time I have regretted the lack of vision, the lack of business acumen, the lack of vital spirit, the foolishness that blinded me from taking up this golden opportunity when it was handed to me. Also the fact that I only had ten cents in my pocket at the time." --Mark Twain. |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - August 19, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 19 Aug 00 - 09:21 AM You are all thinking just a litlle more deeply than Will meant, I think. I think he was just saying, looking back on it, that in his opinion, he was a pretty brainless kid to have sold off that prosperous bunch of cattle and taken off to places unknown. BUT, I also think he was just poking fun at himself and would not have changed that decision for the world. Blue Jay, I've been wondering about you! Great to hear the good news! Congratulations!!! Lox....LMAO! thanks all, kat |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - August 19, 2000 From: BlueJay Date: 19 Aug 00 - 05:19 AM I got it, Lox, and got a kick out of it. Kat, this one strikes home to me. I just moved to La Veta, CO, kind of a whirlwind thing. New town, new job etc. In fact I only dug my computer out of it's various boxes 24 hours ago. No Mudcatting for me for the last few weeks. Not to disagree with Will Rogers, but I think it is a matter of perspective. I have actually been considering this move for about six months, (in time for the kids to get in school), but it's funny how time sneaks up on you. I was actually at work when I realized, "hey, if I want to be out of here by August 1, then I have to give my two weeks notice of resignation today! So I did, without a place to live, (I'd been looking), and without a firm job offer. Just kind of trusted it'd all work out, and it did. Got a job as a prison nurse, (sticking convicts with needles and telling them they have to buy their own Tylenol), and found a cool house to rent, owned by Lannie Garrett, a top notch singer up in Denver. Plus the music scene is really cool in La Veta. I've met several good musicians to jam with, plus my daughter and son in law live here, and they are always up for a jam. We'll also be able to help them with their rapidly growing acoustic instrument amplification business. The whole move is really focused on music more than anything. I am ecstatic. My Mother, God bless her, would agree with Will Rogers. She tends to think I have acted much too rashly, (quitting my job of the last five years, with State benefits etc). I think I've thought it out pretty well. As I said, it is all a matter of perspective. Thanks, BlueJay |

Subject: RE: Thought for the day - August 19, 2000 From: CamiSu Date: 19 Aug 00 - 12:30 AM Kat, does that mean that those of us who have a hard time making up our minds have to much of one? |

Subject: Thought for the day - August 19, 2000 From: katlaughing Date: 19 Aug 00 - 12:18 AM When a fellow ain't got much mind, it don't take him long to make it up. Will Rogers, speaking years later about his youthful decision to sell the herd of cattle his father had given him as his first "grubstake", worth $12,000 by the time of the sale, when he was 21 and light out for the "Argentine" with another young cowboy. |
