I started out real shaky-like just poking around.
Me sister with her off-breaks, well, she had me pinned down,
But when me little brother bowled, I gave him the clout,
And when we stopped for lunch I was twenty-four not out.

Well, then me uncle Nev came on, bowling his quicks,
But I was scoring freely with deflections and flicks,
As I passed me fifty, I paused for a beer,
And when I hit the roof next door they all began to cheer.

I took some on the body but they didn't hurt a bit.
I only hit the ball that was there to be hit.
I hooked 'em off me eyebrows and I tried to keep me head,
And the ton came up with a straight drive through the window of the shed.

Dug, I vaguely remember this one and I'll keep an eye out for it. I'll also consult with a family friend who is a form Test player, coach, administrator and writer, but I suspect that sporting songs may not be his forte. Re cricket songs, a couple I remember hearing are:

Cricket Lovely Cricket sung by Lord Kitchener
and
Battle of the Century sung by the same bloke I think.

The first one went something like this:

and the otherone starts:

My reference source was 'Mike Jackson's Campfire Songbook', Bluegum Music, Queensland. Many of the songs are in Public Domain, The coptright for this song is 1990 Warner-Chappell Music Pty Ltd. Regards, John

I just tried my suggested guess at a URL ... and went stright into an ABC page with a link to the Shop. I did a search for a CD, by Haynes, subject cricket and got:

You can't go wrong at that price! (Or with the CD, it's kept me sane while Patricia was glued to the TV all summer.) They must be clearing out last Christmas stock ... I paid ~ $25 for it.

(I take it, my old mate from "Outback Bush Band" and other places back then?) I'm glad you got a reference site for Champs' songs, because the books I had in mind didn't have this one! I need to buy a few more recent collections.

I should also trust my memory less for spelling: John Gray is right in spelling Jim Haynes. I sat one seat behind Jim and his lady on the 5000-odd-km bus trip to the 1990 Australian Folk festival in Kuranda, Far North Queensland, and back ... a very funny bloke!) The tracks Joh Gray mentions, I have on 12" Vinyl, but I have a few of Jim's CDs: Here I am, 8314072, Kookaburra Music, 1994 (EMI private pressing?) and It's Not Cricket, 7243 5 23535 21, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 1999.

There is probably an ABC site for their recordings (www.abc.gov.au/&c, &c, &c ...?)

Jim Haynes has put out some extremely funny songs, Since Cheryl Went Feral,I Lobster And I Never Flounder,The Chook From Snowy River etc, some in conjunction with Greg Champion. ( for our US friends a chook is a chicken )

There is also a poem by Thomas Spencer, "How Macdougall Topped the Score"; dates from 100 years or so ago, but quite humorous even by today's standards - do you have that one too?

I'm looking for the lyrics to that well known contemporary piece of Aussie folk doggerel "I scored a hundred in the back yard at Mum's" .(Greg Champion?) I'm also looking for other comic cricket songs. Can anybody help?
