Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: hesperis Date: 25 Mar 01 - 11:50 PM Deni - great! Sorcha - Correction: any listen counts until April 1st, when only Preemies will get paid per listen. After that, to actually support the (free) artist, it would be better to buy their CD, if they have one. Hopefully I will have a CD up there soon... and there are some magical songs coming, as well, now that I can convert from midi to mp3! YAY! |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: hesperis Date: 25 Mar 01 - 11:01 PM Deni - NMA representation just means that you have someone who can help you with technical stuff, and who is hopefully fairly active in the mp3.com community to write to stations about your music, try to create excitement about you and your music, and they get 5% of your CD sales. (You still get 50%, it's taken off mp3.com's portion.) (And I don't think NMA reps get anything from P4P, but I'm not sure.) And they will be one of your biggest fans except for your partner and family, hopefully! Sorcha - any listen (hifi or lofi play, download, and mp3 radio play,) counts towards the money that the artist earns. You don't need to pay to download music from mp3.com, but you do need to give them some information. If you sign up for "my mp3.com" and sign in, then you won't get "nag screens" asking you for your email and if you're over 21. Those can be annoying! |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: Sorcha Date: 25 Mar 01 - 04:28 PM One more dumb question: if I click on Play, does the artist get $$, or do I have to download? Do I have to pay for the download? (I'm really ignorant about this mp3 stuff) |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: Deni Date: 25 Mar 01 - 04:02 PM OK Here I go again. I read somewhere about artist representation. How does that work? Do you have to employ someone? Just think in 2 weeks I'll know it all and won't have to ask all these questions! Love and all that Deni |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: hesperis Date: 25 Mar 01 - 09:32 AM Sorry about that, Jande is at www.mp3.com/seannarowe The name that I use for my NMA Artist Promoter role is "Serpent Goddess". I created a station to showcase the artists I represent on mp3.com, and that's probably what you found. Oh, and thanks for the listens! |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: Sorcha Date: 25 Mar 01 - 12:14 AM That did it, kat, thanks! |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: katlaughing Date: 25 Mar 01 - 12:06 AM Sorcha, search for Serpent Goddess and you will find it, under her 3D name, at least that what I surmise it to be.:-) |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: Sorcha Date: 24 Mar 01 - 11:59 PM Where is Jande's page? I don't find "Jande" on the mp3 search......... |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: katlaughing Date: 24 Mar 01 - 11:33 PM Hesperis, thank you very much! As you know, if you've received my PM, I am going to look it over and still need to change the file to mp3, but I cannot say enough how much I appreciate all of your help. I also will be answering your further email tomorrow. It's been a long day here and I am too pooped to think clearly.:-) Thanks! Oh, and I will go do a few clickies to Jande's to help it along, too. kat |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: hesperis Date: 24 Mar 01 - 07:42 PM Jande - Hmmm, it's over a month, but we didn't promote you right away, as we were still fixing the web page... Your first song became available on Feb 13th. I will see what I can do to get more people listening by then... time to write to a few of the top stations, methinks... |
|
Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: hesperis Date: 24 Mar 01 - 07:03 PM Jande - I think it is, actually! I'll just go double-check your web stats... Yeah, you might want to put something on your page telling your fans that you need just a few more plays in order to be able to afford the new service... Do you think that'd be a good ideé? Which reminds me, time to go listen to your stuff. kat - it worked. Check your PMs. |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: Jande Date: 24 Mar 01 - 06:13 PM Hes? Is this my first full month on MP3.com? I already have $15.43 in earnings. I've promised myself that if I earn the $20 by the end of this month I'll join the Preemies. but it will have to continue to pay for itself and hopefuly put a wee loaf of bread on the table from time to time, until I can get the real ~ Jande |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: hesperis Date: 24 Mar 01 - 05:25 PM Sorri, Deni. Yes, that is what a Premium Artist is. They get a few advantages, but mostly because mp3.com has taken value away from the "free" services in order to make it look like they have cool stuff for the "Preemies" |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: hesperis Date: 24 Mar 01 - 04:59 PM kat - I'll try to add a band from my NMA account, and if I can get it to work, I'll give you the info. Then you can go in and make changes... Let's just hope it works. |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: Alice Date: 24 Mar 01 - 04:01 PM Hi, Deni, anyone can sign up for an mp3.com page and upload files. You need to create an mp3 file that fits their specs, and is in the public domain, or for which you own the copyright, or have rights to use it. The "premium" feature is a new charge of $19.99 a month US, starting the first of next month, that will allow you to be payed back for a minimum number of unique listener plays each day. If you just want to put up mp3 files, you don't have to pay anything. |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: Deni Date: 24 Mar 01 - 03:30 PM I don't know much about MP3.com, but is a premium artist someone who pays money monthly for being placed on the site? sort of rental? I'd appreciate knowing that, although you've probably answered the same question dozens of times elsewhere. Cheers Deni |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: katlaughing Date: 24 Mar 01 - 03:16 PM Thanks, Willi'O...I know things are kind of up in the air, so any info helps...the way I saw it today, even Pay for Play will not be available to anyone but Premium after April 1st. We had wanted to just get an instrumental of a song up in the area they have for music license/production or whatever it is called, but even with that it kept dumping us back to sign up for Premium. If I had more files ready I guess it might be worth it. Will definitely be looking at IUMA, too. Thanks! kat |

Subject: RE: Help: Mp3 basics - questions From: Willie-O Date: 24 Mar 01 - 03:11 PM I don't know about converting midis, not being a midi guy, but I expect you have to convert them to WAV files (or Mac equivalent?) and thence to mp3.s The only thing I've heard from mp3.com about not available services after april 1st is no pay-for-play money. So presumably we'll still be able to put new CD's out. Judging from how long it's taking to get a new upload onto a site if you're not paying the money though, it appears to be hardly worth it to join up now unless you want to pay the $20 month. (I guess my stuff stays at the bottom of the queue--it's an unsubtle message that "premium" service pretty much means "any" service.) Worth it to some and others will consider it a reasonable business expense. But it's evident that $20 a month is only a start--that's just to be considered in there with the other hundreds of thousands of suddenly "premium" artists. I bet mp3.com will make some money this year, but I'm not sure if they'll make it from me...oh there I go again. Definitely looking at IUMA... Sorry kat, not much help am i\I?

Subject: Mp3 basics - questions From: katlaughing Date: 24 Mar 01 - 02:49 PM Rather than muck up the other mp3 thread, I thought I'd use this one for some basic questions. Their site is a bit confusing and they've made it difficult to find anything on any service other than the new Premium. So, for you have have boldly gone before, I would really appreciate knowing how to do the following and a BIG THANKS in advance: 1)How do I make my midi file into an mp3 file? I went to the site & started to download their Musicmatch program, then noticed that it was only for going from CD to mp3! 1a)I want to go from my midifiles on my harddrive, either from Noteworthy Composer, WinJammer Software, or whatever else I need to use. When I tried to record from NWC to RealProducer, though, RP said it couldn't do it, so I guess those two are incompatible. 2) Does mp3 offer any free listing services after April 1st? Everytime I tried to sign up for one of the other programs listed, I got told only Premium artists could join that program. Is mp3 going to be worth it? I'll go read the other threads for that one and look into IUMA, also. Thank YEW! kat |
