Ever try to correct pronunciation for somebody from Boston? Geeees. Leave it the way it is and be thankful you can understand them at all!

These team names should really fit the places they come from: The Boston Baked Beans / The Philadelphia Cream Cheesers / The Denver Omelettes / The Maine Pilot Crackers / The Kansas City Barbecues / The Los Angeles Smoggers / The San Francisco Sourdough /

I tell you, I love the new movement towards mass nouns in sports teams in general... I looked up at the news channel te other day and saw Earthquake 47, Hurricanes 23, and I thought I was on the Weather Channel!

(Then again, I woke up this morning to the radio saying Here, 89, there 99.5, somewhere else 103.5 - and I thought it was the weather report, when it was station identification...)

They should wear kilts or change the spelling to sell-ticks (sell tickets?)

Now that that's settled . . .

Lets change the name of that DC foolball squad to
"The Redskin Peanuts" so as to end the disrespect
directed toward "Earlier-Than-Most Americans".

Now imagine a peanut, flattened by a defensiveback,
lying flat on the field in the "PlantersDome", while
the crowd yells "CRUNCH" and pops in another mouthful
of their team's namesake.

Now that's marketing with a purpose.

A perfect fit for the American Sports-Business.

But . . .

Basketballers in kilts? Yes, Basketballers in kilts!

AirJordan on TV shot from the wasteup (ala Presley).

Or, the courtside camera catching celebs peeking. . .

Okay, okay. I'll quit now.

The hard vs. soft c in Celtic has been fought out for a long time, and not only in the context of the sports franchise. In Greek and Latin, our source for the word, the c in Celtic is hard (of course, in Greek it's not a c but a k or kappa). In English, c followed by e softens. So, technically speaking, the Boston team has it right in terms of modern English; the Celtic=Keltic contingent has it right in terms of the source languages. Let's hear it for K/Celtic s/civilization and S/Celtic k/culture!

Maybe sportsters just have a little difficulty with getting it hard, er, as in consonant sounds. :>)

I suppose that the basketball teams' supporters are as numerous as the Glasgow football teams', so we'll just have to satisfy ourselves that we're right and they're wrong, ner ner ni ner ner!
