Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: Naemanson Date: 19 Jul 01 - 03:30 PM Susan, the Press Room INCLUDES chanties but is not limited to chanties. The music varies from O'Carolan tunes to British Music Hall to modern singer songwriters to you name it. The only things that don't work is anything quiet because the atmosphere ranges from noisy to rambunctious. |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: Susan A-R Date: 16 Jul 01 - 09:24 PM The beauy about Interstate 89, which runs from the Canadian border down through VT to Hanover is that it's both fast and quite scenic. The Press Room is shanty singing, from what I've gathered, and knowing Barry Finn and the New Hapmshire, Maine gang, fine shanty singing it is too. Susan A-R |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: Naemanson Date: 16 Jul 01 - 03:39 PM Sounds like a fun trip. I heartily concur with Bill that you should try to hit the Press Room session on Friday. Excellent fun and always a contingent of Mudcatters on hand. How many of you are there? Are you camping or moteling? |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: Midchuck Date: 16 Jul 01 - 02:28 PM Woodchucks' Revenge has a gig at the Morningstar Cafe in Springfield, VT, Saturday the 15th at 9:00 pm, if you're interested. That's a pretty quick trip from Hanover - across the bridge, down I-91 a ways. Peter. |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: kendall Date: 16 Jul 01 - 02:12 PM I always quote distance in miles. Hours varies according to the traffic and the weight of the drivers' foot. |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: Charlie Baum Date: 16 Jul 01 - 01:55 PM Each segment of your journey: Boston to Maine; Maine to Quebec City; Quebec City to Montreal; and Montreal to Dartmouth, can be driven in 5 hours or less using the fastest roads, usually Interstates in the U.S. and Autoroutes in Quebec. When you say the "best route:" if you have time on any given segment, consider venturing off onto smaller, more scenic roads, and let serendipity happen to you. New England can be VERY scenic. By the way Boston to the beginning border of Maine is short; it can be done in a hour-an-a-half to two hours, if not rush hour or the start or end of a weekend (Fri. evening, Sun. night). On the other hand, you can spend five hours or more driving the fastest route to a point farther up the coast of Maine (Down East, as the Mainers say). --Charlie Baum |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: bill\sables Date: 16 Jul 01 - 01:23 PM I would suggest that you buy yourself a "Rand McNally Travel Atlas" It has a page to a state and includes Canada, It is easy to read and has a section where they give a time for a journey. If you ask anyone in the US how far it is to somewhere they always answer in hours and minutes anyway, never in miles as we do in the UK. You will find that a four hour journey in the UK will tire you more thay a 12 hour journey in the US. I notice you are staying in Boston on the first night which is good planning so you can start fresh next day or just drive up to Portsmouth NH on the Friday 7th and go to the session in the Press Room and meet a few other catters. We drove up to Maine after arriving from the UK and I was knackered after about 50 miles Bill |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: Grab Date: 12 Jul 01 - 05:52 PM Check Expedia for route planning in the States and Canada - that's definitely got Canadian places in its database. Graham. |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: Susan A-R Date: 09 Jul 01 - 10:13 PM Montreal is about 3 1/2 hours from Hanover in a straight shot. Ben and Jerrys main plant in Waterbury Center VT. is only about ten minutes out of the way, but you can sometimes have to wait in line for a tour. I'm also just off that route in Montpelier, about an hour north of Hanover, so if you want to stop off, or if you have any other questions about the area, send off a personal message. Susan A-R |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Jul 01 - 07:13 PM Lately I always use http://www.mapquest.com/ to plan my route whenever I drive to any unfamiliar place. I don't know whether it works for places outside the US, though. It also computes estimated travel time pretty well. I recommend you use it before you leave home. It might be hard to find a computer when you're travelling. Tourist information centers are not as easy to find in the US as in Britain, either. |

Subject: RE: Help: US holiday Sept. 6th through 21st 2001 From: MMario Date: 09 Jul 01 - 03:01 PM Plan A: bring Bill Sables with you...you can probably do it in 4 days...*grin* seriously- depending on route and just where you go - there are at least two full days of driving in there - possibly more. So you want to buyild in some recovery time as well. a whale watch cruise usually pretty well takes up a day - especially if you get chilled. |
