And he probably is, Rick! The Dbacks are hurting financially.

Craig sure does have an odd batting stance, no doubt about that, but he sure but the hits that have resulted from that stance has really helped the DBacks get where they are now. I hadn't noticed the "wierd little grin," but, if he plays tonight, I'll check it out.

Boy am I looking forward to this game. My ideal scenario is RJ coming in to get the last out! Won't happen though. By the way Doug, I'm getting irritated with that dorky batting stance and wierd little grin from Graig Councell. On the other hand it beats Collangelo's grimace. This is an old team, and everytime they go to a close up of him he seems to be thinking....."$$$$$ out the window"!!

There are a lot of "second guessers" here in Phoenix, but I think we feel as badly for Kim as any other baseball fans do. Kim was doing an excellent job before the fatal hits, and he has done a good job of closing this year. Those nights just weren't his nights.

Hi Mark

In that '64 season, I was still growing up in Montreal, and of course there were no Expos, and no Bluejays, so I was a rabid Yankees fan.....but some current (at the time) and former Phillies were high on my list of sad heroes. Names like Curt Simmons (missing finger) Robin Roberts (missing run support) Richie Ashburn (missing power) Eddie Waitkus (missing life) and Gene Mauch (missing Pennant)

I WANTED to root for the Phils, but we couldn't get the games on our radio. We DID get Mel Allen loud and clear though, so that's how loyalties get started.

Trade ya one Johnny Kucks for two Stan Lopatas.

Of course, there are those of us who remember the whole damn Philadelphia TEAM blowing a whole damn SEASON (losing the last 10 games in '64). It only took them 16 years to recover. Philadelphia did have a great losing tradition, it's true. When I was a kid, I remember hearing the saying, "On any given Sunday, any team in the league can beat the Eagles." Of course, that was before Bobby Clarke, and Dr. J, and Mike Schmidt, and Frank Rizzo.

Aloha,
Mark

(Once again, Rick, hats off to your thread titles. I could have sworn this was going to have a 9/11 connection.)

Of course Kendall....We got the "right stuff."

Like I said up top, a lot of what happens to him now, win or lose, will be helped by the great veteran pitching staff on the DB's roster........and of course to Kim's own personal "philosophy."

I keep thinking about Dennis Eckersley. He got nailed by gibson, but the guy went on with it and became one of the best all time......Got an MVP and a Cy Young......It can work out and for Kim I hope it does. Everyone says the kid has a great career in front of him.

Hey, Kendall...it's the same kind of subhuman mentality that watches a video of a smart bomb or cruise missile nailing its target and triumphantly yells "Gotcha!" when the explosion occurs.

On the whole though, I prefer baseball.

Play ball!

I think they could [pull this thing out of the fire]. As you say, for Kim's sake, I hope they do.

Even before I'd read the second paragraph of your post, Rick, I was thinking of Mitch Williams, as I was thinking of him upon hearing the results of the last couple of Series games (sorry, couldn't stay up late enough to watch them!). Yeah, Philadelphia fans are not known for their lovingkindness and forgiveness. I wonder about Arizona fans?

Thanks Max, or whoever. Makes me remember that we had our own "Wild guy", Todd Stottlemyre. He also had a couple of on-field meltdowns, and later, before a huge TV audience told the Mayor of Phillie to "kiss my ass". Good thing the Jays weren't playing St. Louis that year (where Todd ended up) he might have had some 'splainin' to do.

Oh well, Curt and RJ to go. They COULD still pull this thing out of the fire couldn't they?

Rick

He sure was. The Phillies 5-man rotation was Curt Shilling, Danny Jackson, Tommy Green, and Ben Rivera. Mitch Williams was the closer.

Indeed he did Jack. Just like Kim. I remember watching that series on the edge of my chair, hoping that the Phillies would bring in Mitch again...and they did. He didn't get his name by accident...like Kim, his ball broke in a wide arc almost everytime, so if the batter had patience they probably could have gotten a walk most of the time. Totally different than say, Schilling, who's ball seems to just hop enough to get by the hitters. Speaking of Schilling, wasn't he on the Phillies that year?

He sure did..in Game 5, the Philles were winning 13-8 and Mitch The Unforgiven gave up so many runs that they lots 14-13 in the highest-scoring World Series game in history.

My memory is a little hazy on this but I believe Mitch had a very bad SERIES, didn't he blow a huge Phillies lead a couple of games before the Carter home run?

Well Ken I hope we're at least a notch above the Soccer fans who burn down stadiums.....but maybe not in this day and age.

The look on that kids face was amazing. Normally he seems cool as a cumcumber, but just think of HOW emotional the New York fans are this year. From a technical standpoint, his weird delivery looks unhittable...but obviously isn't. New York's randy Choate throws the same way, and they whack him all over the park.

I read this article on Mitch Williams' life after blowing the World Series, and he'd have been better off if he'd just murdered someone. No matter who he meets they ALWAYS mention Carter's homer. Yoiks!

Rick mentioned one of the things I hate about sports. The death threats, how in the hell can anyone justify a threat to anothers life over a silly ball hitting/kicking/thing? What kind of sub human mentality is at work here?

LMAO......This cracks me up on two levels!!! My first thought was that this thread was about some aid to Korean store owners and that whole thing which can get nasty. Then I read it and the second laugh was that I thought I'd post something like this on the "world series" thread. Two laughs....and aboth a good title and a good thought.

It's a "good thought" because I had the same one last night! Not quite as dramatic as a single mistake like Buckner, but then again maube more dramatic for it's repetition. Whichever way, it can be a career ender if the DB's lose the series. Ain't gonna' help much even if they win! I hate the whole "closer" thing and Kim threw a lot from the night before...60+ pitches. Not a great idea on Brenly's part.

That image of this poor kid crouched down on the mound, head in his hands................Here is one time that having a bunch of veterans like Schilling and Johnson around to hopefully pull him through........Remember, Eckersley came back to be great and even won the Cy Young........Hope the same happens to Kim.

I gotta tell you, my heart goes out to that poor little sucker (Mr. Kim). Twice in two nights he absolutely blows an Arizona victory. Tonight even the camera man stopped focusing on him when he went into shock. They went to commercial and he obviously wasn't in the dugout after that. It may seem trivial in the real world but this guy is gonna live under a HUGE cloud the rest of his life, unless the Diamondbacks miraculously come back to win the Series.

Several years ago Philadelphia's Mitch (Wild thing) Williams gave up a home run to Toronto's Joe Carter in the ninth that lost the series for the Phillies. The guy was hounded and forced to move from his home. He got death threats for years, and will forever be known for his 'gopher ball'. Every ball fan remembers:

Fred (Bonehead) Merkle

Ralph Branca

Ralph Terry (Maz's homer)

Bill Buckner

For Kim's sake, I sure hope Arizona wins it. (I know I'm being a big suck!)

Rick
