Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: mooman Date: 04 Jan 02 - 10:00 AM Not having attended any festivals last year but quite a number of concerts here in Brussels, my three favourites were Milladoiro (Galicia) (awesome in every way), Ani DiFranco with her recent brass-boosted band (utterly brilliant live performance) and the Gangbe Brass Band (from Benin: marvellous performers and boosted from their normal 11-12 on stage by the arrival mid-concert of another 7 friends from France!). As you can see I am somewhat eclectic in my tastes! mooman |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Kelticgrasshopper Date: 03 Jan 02 - 07:15 PM NoMattch.... Actually I saw Gordie in of all places Deerfield, Mass. He had just come from the Celtic Colors Festival. I hope to make it up for that festival one of these years. Gordie mentioned a wonderful festival on the Isle of Skye. Anyone out there been to that one ?? |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 03 Jan 02 - 06:57 PM Sorry, I'm only looking for strange! :) Seriously, thanks. It sounds like a great time and I am 99% sure that I'm going to camp. Sorry to get us off subject, but Old Songs is such a magnificent festival. What I witnessed last year apparently is the norm. I can't wait to go back! Ron |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: bigchuck Date: 03 Jan 02 - 06:52 PM Ron, we have camped every year. I love it and wouldn't do it any other way, although you do need to be tolerant of sleep deprivation. If you camp next year, look for the sign of the Woodchuck, which is usually near workshop area 3. We're not nearly as strange as they claim. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Ron Olesko Date: 03 Jan 02 - 05:05 PM Thank you Zhenya! I think I am going to go that route this year! Your note answered the questions I was about to ask! I'm not a big camper either but this sounds exactly like the experience I would enjoy. I hated dragging myself away at 1:30 in the morning to drive 1/2 hour to the hotel. I would have stayed up all night! Perhaps the cold shower will do me good!!! Thanks again! Ron

Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Zhenya Date: 03 Jan 02 - 04:44 PM Ron, I camped one year. I have to admit I'm not a camper myself, but my usual hotel-preferring friend couldn't go. I talked someone else into it, but he would only go if we camped. I'm happy to say that even for a non-camper, it was a good experience. The only negative point was that, at least the year I did this, there was only cold water in the showers. (Being a non-camper, I naievely kept expecting the water to warm up at some point!) They had a quiet area and a non-quiet area, for people who wanted to play/sing into the wee hours. The rate was very cheap although I think it's gone up somewhat now. It was definitely open to concert-goers; I don't know if anyone else uses it. It felt very secure and was very convenient to everything. You can park your car by your tent, but then they ask that you don't move the car again until you're ready to leave for good. Hope that gives you some idea about it. Zhenya |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Ron Olesko Date: 03 Jan 02 - 03:57 PM Just curious - has anyone camped at Old Songs? I noticed tents last year, is that space for concert-goers, volunteers, vendors or??? Ron |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Jock Morris Date: 03 Jan 02 - 03:52 PM I reckon Milnathort was probably the best I did last year, closely followed by Ulverston. Others came close, but the presence of so many friends tips it in favour of Milnathort. Only another 11 or so weeks till it happens again! Scott |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Zhenya Date: 03 Jan 02 - 02:45 PM Another vote for Old Songs! This was, I think, my 8th year. Every single time has been fantastic! |

Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: 53 Date: 03 Jan 02 - 11:38 AM the concert that garth brooks did on the aircraft carrier in norfolk, virginia, was awesome. BOB |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Ron Olesko Date: 03 Jan 02 - 11:17 AM The Old Songs Festival. It was my first trip there and I was astounded! I am counting the days until this years! Ron |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Sooz Date: 03 Jan 02 - 10:39 AM You can tell I'm not completely impartial! (Whitby and Cleethorpes were great as well) |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Sooz Date: 03 Jan 02 - 10:38 AM My favourite festival was Gainsborough in October. To see some pictures of people having fun Click here. Vin Garbutt was on top form, Jez Lowe was wonderful, Bernard Wriggley made our sides ache....... ( I could go on and on.. ) For 2002 we have Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson, John Kirkpatrick and, thanks to a lottery grant, a whole day of Lincolnshire music which will mark the end of our Live Lincolnshire Music in Live Lincolnshire Venues Project. The dates for your diary 18 - 20 October. Please come and join us! |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: NoMattch Date: 03 Jan 02 - 10:18 AM Hi Kelticgrasshopper, I saw this thread on the list and thought the same as you! I was at that show during the Celtic Colours fest. I came up from Philly, PA for 1 1/2 weeks to see the shows and do some hiking. I picked the Songwriters Circle gig as one of my 'must-sees' because I wanted to see the great Brian McNeil. Being from the US, I didn't know much about Gordie or Ron Hynes. The show was even better than I had expected. I wound up buying CDs from both Gordie and Ron that night and have been listening to them a lot. There's nothing like a show that introduces you to great talent that you may have otherwise not seen. Did you go to the College afterwards for the all-night fest? Matt |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: LoopySanchez Date: 03 Jan 02 - 10:12 AM For me, it had to be New Orleans Jazzfest. The best in Dixieland Jazz, plus Paul Simon, Dave Matthews, The Neville Brothers, The North Mississippi All Stars (Great Blues Band), and a great Exhibit detailing the life of Louis Armstrong. That's not counting the first week I missed, during which the likes of Van Morrison and B.B. King performed. |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: KingBrilliant Date: 03 Jan 02 - 10:09 AM Fave festival was Guildford (UK) this summer. Especially staying up most of the night singing & drinking & chatting with the neighbouring tentfulls under the Welsh Widders' gazebo. My favourite memory is of running through the campsite to the loos several times at about 4am with Amoret (daughter) - both of us exhorting eachother to 'step high' amid gales of laughter (guy ropes dontchaknow). Not very thoughtful for those trying to sleep - but I prefer to fool myself that our loud & lively little troupe was keeping the tent-robbers at bay. Kris |
Subject: RE: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: GUEST,John Hiatt ?? Date: 03 Jan 02 - 09:54 AM Gordie Sampson was due to open for him in New York. But due to the events on October 11, his train was stopped at the border. That day touched so many in so many ways. |

Subject: Best Concert/Festival 2001 From: Kelticgrasshopper Date: 03 Jan 02 - 08:09 AM Lets think back on this crazy year. Try and get past all of the horror and think about great concerts or festivals which you may have attended. For me the best concert was in October.. with Cape Breton's great singer songwriter Gordie Sampson..the guy is amazing..his talent as a writer is without question and his talent as a guitar player, well only about the best I have ever seen. We were in an audience of about 40 people and he played his heart out. If you get a chance to see this guy don't hesitate. Festival..favorite... The Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival on PEI Canada. WWW.atlanticmusician/rollobayfiddlefest.com ( I think ). This festival is great, family friendly, a weekend of music, dance and fun. If you are heading north this coming July make it a stop on your journey. Always held the third weekend in July. They have booked Jerry Holland for next summer. Try and find the website if I've got it wrong. Go to Google and you'll find a link I'm sure. |
