My brother used to watch Tonya Harding practice at the Portland rink. He admired her drive and dedication and skill. At the same time, he said, he wasn't really surprised when the scandal broke- she, he thought, was SO determined.

Were my brother still alive, I doubt that he'd be surprised at her signing on for the fisticuffs. And he would probably have watched the fight, and rooted for her. I grew up in a boxing family but I can't imagine wanting to watch this one.

I saw Tonya Harding on a talk show a few weeks ago (pure accident--I was channel-surfing on a slow night) and she was whining to the host about people thinking she was not a nice person and calling her "trailer trash" and that sort of thing. Sitting there with her blond hair and her waif-like look, she was kinda cute, and I felt a touch of sympathy for her.

Then I heard about the "Celebrity Boxing" thing, and I figured "When it comes to trying to change her image, it looks like the Bimbo of the Silver Blades has a bit of a problem determining what is and what is not good PR."

Then, with the same kind of motivation one has for watching anything that one knows is going to be downright sordid, I watched the match. Considering the nature of the contestants, it was about what I expected. And then!! Early on, Paula wilts and decides she's had enough. The match is over. She's standing there, her hands down at her sides having a word with the referee, when Sweet Little Tonya walks up and pops her one! The first thing that came into my mind was--"trailer trash!" Poor little waif. She was certainly standing behind the door when good taste was passed out.

Votes for future bouts:-- How about Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp?

This just in....boxing promoter Don King announces Mike Tyson will be fighting a 15 round match with with former Webster star Emmanual Lewis. Sources close to the wild haired boxing promoter state that King is confident that Tyson will prevail. The only quote from the Lewis camp, "ARE YOU STONED???"

Now if they ran political debates like that, they'd be a lot more fun for the rest of us without much of a loss of actual substance.

William F. Buckley versus Woody Allen??? Now THAT would've been worth seeing! :-) I'd have bet on Buckley in 5 rounds or less, eh?

I didn't watch it. I'm waiting for the tag-team wrestling match of Bill Clinton & James Carville vs. Kenneth Starr & Jerry Falwell. Or did Death Match already run that one?

Peter, I'm afraid ALL your heroes will crumble into feats of clay if you watch them too closely.

Yes I DID heed my good wife's call to join her in the basement.

Yes, the mother of all Silcone breast implant battles was going on when I got there.

However, Heather was also reading a book about the death of Thomas a Beckett, while occasionally looking up at the 'murder in the casino' on the tube. THAT is the image I will treasure!

Sometimes (my) life is simply too complex to even comprehend.

Hey CarolC - I take no irony badly, be it heavy-handed, soft-footed, dulcet or fortissimmo (sp?). I do, however, take ironing badly. The unfolding of the ironing board (loud and ratchety) frightens the cat, and I have such difficulty pressing the socks so the creases are just right.

Also, I take iron badly. Keep forgetting, too busy, etc.

Thank you for your kind words. I reciprocate. Your voice consistantly comes through clearly and considerately, and that is an admirable quality.

So, I forgive your minor needling, and take my leave, as I'm keen to view my new video copy of "Diesel & Decibels - Mega Motor Monster Truck Mayhem Xlll: Showdown in the Saddledome", featuring celebrity drivers Alan Thicke and Patsy Gallant.

I just remembered - I think William F. Buckley went toe-to-toe with Woody Allen in that SCTV sketch.

This current programming goes on my list of symptoms of a society in serious decline.

*GRIN* Wow, Bardford, do you think?

(btw, don't take my little bit of heavy handed irony there badly or anything. You're still one of my favorite Canadians)

It wasn't a crowbar. It was an ASP collapsible baton.

The scariest thing about this whole mess is the idea of trading blood with either one of them.

The old show SCTV had the "PBS Battle of the Network Stars" - Mr. Rogers boxing Julia Child. William F. Buckley duked it out with someone, can't recall at the moment. Hilarious stuff at the time. This current programming goes on my list of symptoms of a society in serious decline.

I heard it on the streets that this fight was just a tune up match for Paula Jones who granted Billy Bob Clinton a rematch. Time and place to be announced later.

Paula stepped in on short notice to fight a somewhat scary world class athelete. I don't think she was expected to last as long as she did. I don't feel embarrassed for her. I feel worse for Barry Williams who got completely creamed.

Pray for me Jeri

1st match: Bonaduce (however you spell it) by a TKO in the 2nd round.
On a musical note, so to speak, it's really easy to practice picking while this is on because there's no musical score for boxing. Yet.

So I think it will be Bonnaduce, Harding and Vanilla Ice. (Danny Bonaduce is fighting the guy from The Brady Bunch, and I can't remember who Vanilla Ice is up against.) Hot Damn! This is better than Jerry Springer! Makes me want to go buy a 6-pack of Budweiser and some pork rinds...

Come on, Rick, admit it. You'd rather be in a smoky bar playing "The Farmer Song", "Smoke On The Water", and other similar requests from abusive drunks who question your taste in shirts and throw coins at you to show their approval.

"Play Stairway To Heaven!", someone shouts from the back...and you adroitly dodge a thrown beer bottle as you attempt to tune the 2nd string.

Gotta love it. Life in the fast lane. Partying with the big names...like Tonya Harding. You know it's what you really want, Rick, deep down inside... :-)

Well the way I see it sports fans, Tonya's got a lot of motivation (pick up trucks cost money), she has a much lower centre of gravity, and if she still has that ol' crowbar, she could be dangerous in a clinch. Paula's gotta protect that new nose, and there's no record of her punching power when she had that bout with Bubba a few years ago.

Seriously though, every time I (honestly) wonder how I've become so cynical over the years....something like this, and it's obvious popular appeal comes up. Glad I 'left' the real world a few years ago and started my own 'private' one (thank you Q.Crisp).

William Shatner's never...had that... problem... :-)

The Harding/Jones fight promises to be a classic and could just be the beginning of a regular feature, I figure.

Hmmm, let's see now...who could we get to box (or wrestle) Roseanne Barr?
