O.K. Lets start, and in no particular order....
I positively HATE finding the lyrics to songs I've been searching years for.
I positively HATE the jokes, comedy songs & parodies
I positively HATE hearing folks problems and reading the Well-wishes of fellow catters
I positively HATE seeing the extremely intelligent musings on all things music related
I positively HATE seeing my name in print
I positively HATE having to pass on my meagre knowledge or expressing my opinions.
But most of all I HATE IT WHEN I CAN'T CONNECT TO MUDCAT.

Too bad 'guest' posted with no ID. All in all I've learned a great deal in the few months I've been posting here on the Mudcat. Been scalded a couple of times, but never without it being deserved. Have gained much info about instruments of all types. Have had my grammar and spelling corrected(OUCH!). Have researched songs and artists to which I or others have been directed. Some of them are now in my 'Favorites' list and I visit them often. Read with interest one 'guest' being schooled on the influence of Lonnie Donegan. 'Earthquakes anyone?'... Went to some websites and learned about the Mississippi River Basin fault line of which I'd never heard. Had nothing to do with music, but it sure was interesting. Have read dozens more threads than those to which I've posted and have never failed to be impressed with the sense of patience and community other guests besides me have received.

I love the Mudcat! I love having the ability to seek & find the lyrics to (usually several variants) of sings that many people owuld consider fairly(!) obscure, and actually have a forum in which they can be intelligently discussed. I love the jokes, the often-thought-provoking threads, and the general sense of shared community that exists here, even in the very teeth of the occasional silly flame war that inevitably erupts in an arena open to any & all that wish to post.

As with any community, the Mudcat can't be all wine & roses all the time, but it's a wonderful place to hang out * "get to know" many like-minded poeople with similar interests & frames of (musical & otherwise) reference.

Wow. A whopping nine posts to that thread, kat. How astoundingly...cynical. Especially in light of the ways people treat one another badly here every day, day in and day out, year after year. And congratulate one another for it with all their "me too" and "good for you!" posts when someone savages another poster.

Just what we need--another duplicitous smiley face, feel good, River Denial thread to counter the Joe Offer sick of bigotry thread. Happens every time someone begins to talk seriously about just how negative this place really is. It makes you feel all warm and cozy in the midst of all the bigoted and hateful behavior here--makes it easy and enjoyable to ignore. I wonder why it never goes away, what with all your positive, warm and fuzzy feeling threads?

Last year I was hunting high and low for a cd copy of the national theatre production of Larkrise to Candleford but could not find one anywhere, I asked around on the Cat and there were several offers of cdr copies in a very short space of time, thanks Micca.

I have now found an original copy of Larkrise and so passed on the (high quality)cdr to someone else to enjoy. A simple chain but its produced several happy bunnies.

I would like to remark that there is one thing a folky learns as he travels through the decades from Childe to Lightfoot, Dylan and Buffy. S/he learns that the tribulations, passions and drama of our species is not new to our era, not invented first by our generation, not a peculiarity of the American Century or the Bush years or perhaps even our planet. They are the red-hot river of life itself rolling down to an unknown sea, and you can fight, swim, drift or drown, but the river will roll on. That's what I learned anyway, and I don't see how anyone could get intimate with more than a dozen songs across the decade without seeing this starkly.

And knowing that, you also learn that the values of compassion, of trying to understand and help, of putting love above rancor, and the magic of caring about what it is to be human are the real timeless things, the sweet undying parts that even the river never can diminish.

And that's, in my humble opinion, what makes Max's Mudcat a place to come back to over and over, come hell or high water.

This year's secret santa project! I loved having the chance to make a present for someone, and have it be a real surprise...

It was the Digi-trad search engine that drew me to the site -- it was the recipe for Kaluha Chocolate chip cookies that got me hooked on the forum.... (which for some reason, I cannot find through a forum search).

P.S. I also need to express my deep thanks to my friends Jack the Sailor and gnu for being my initial guides to the culture of Newfoundland, with some help from ljc mixed in.

Jack the Sailor embodies some of the best of what's great about Newfoundland, and gnu, although being a native of my paternal grandfather's own home province, New Brunswick (a wonderful province in its own right), has a well developed understanding and appreciation of Nfld. culture.

And of course ljc, being a Scott living in Nfld... well, all I can say is, what a combination!

I like the people that I've met through Mudcat... McGrath, CFlat, Bobert, Deckman, Katlaughing, Jeri, Greg Stephens... and on and on. I've REALLY enjoyed sharing music with each other... some fine musicians here. Most of all, I am drawn to the enthusiasm. Folks that are always tossing in jibes don't really bother me. We've all had to deal with people like that all of our lives. I'm just appreciative that I don't have to go home with them. On Mudcat, you have the choice of ignoring people who are trying to pull your chain, or reaching out and getting to know people who you think you'd like to get to know as friends. Can't beat that...

Well, most recently, I got a shipment of great stuff from Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers, who I learned about from little john cameron here in the Mudcat. Everybody should get some of their stuff, and especially their video.

This is part of a continuing cultural journey I've been taking for about the last year and a half, exploring the rich and amazing culture of Canada. Beginning, of course with the delightful and quirky town of Orillia, Ontario, and continuing on to the maritime provinces generally, and most recently, zeroing in on Newfoundland. All of which was made possible by the Mudcat.

The culture of Newfoundland is really mind-blowing, and it seems to be a very well kept secret. The music is some of the best anywhere, the humor is incredibly subtle and elegant (except when it's goofy, but it's the best goofy humor I've ever seen).

The thing that effects me the most profoundly about it though, is a sort of gently beautiful innocence, and when poignant instead of innocent, it still has a softness and gentleness that makes me feel good every time I listen to it. Sort of like being in a womb with incredible music and brilliant humor. And of course when it's wicked, it's the best kind of wicked.

And there are an amazing number of different accents and dialects, each of which is an absolute delight to hear. Every bit as wonderful as Scottish dialects. (Although a lot of the Nfld. accents and dialects seem to be Irish in origin.) I like to listen to the afternoon Fishing Report on CBC1 out of Nfld. (From a link given to me by the Canadian Mudcatter Bardford - thanks again, Bardford! Still profoundly in your debt here.) When you listen to the fishing report, you can hear a really wonderful variety of different Nfld. accents.

And I've gotten help from several different Mudcatters with my accordion playing and my eternal quest for circus music. Skipjack K8 being the formost on my list of accordion mentors.

And I've made a ton of really wonderful friends through the Mudcat. Some of them I've spent time with in person, some I've spoken to over the phone, and some I've gotten to know through the written word.

One of the most special of these, I came to know and develop a deep friendship with just through Personal Messages and through his posts in the forum. This was LR Mole who passed away just before Christmas, and I still miss him terribly. But I still have all of the PMs we exchanged; a little over a year of them. What an incredible gift.

And I'll always cherish the time I spent in Orillia (about a month and a half) in the company of flattop, Little Hawk, and hesperis. I've never felt as at home anywhere as I did when I was there enjoying the warmth of their friendship and hospitality. (And of course, meeting and becoming friends with Mr. Fielding while there was a wonderful added bonus.)

I know there's a lot more, but I don't want to monopolize the thread any more than I have already.

I've heard tons of good music from indi artists that just want to share the music...to me that's what it is all about.

Well, at first it was because of the music content, and talking to others about that.

Then I started getting to know a lot of individuals, and they became interesting in their own right.

Then I got drawn into general discussions about anything and everything, and I have always been interested in politics, so naturally I got drawn into that quite a bit.

Plus I got to like all the humour here, some of which is quirky and some of which is downright wonderful.

It's sort of like living in a small community where there's a whole lot of socializing, like there used to be before the advent of television...it just keeps broadening out.

All in all, I think the Mudcat is a great place.

No matter what the place, each of our experiences of a thing is largely up to us as individuals. There is bad everywhere, but there is good to be found everywhere too. The happy people are not the lucky ones, they're the ones who *decided* to be happy regardless of the circumstances.

I love the digitrad! I have harvested I don't know *how* many lyrics from this place. I will also add that there is no better place to ask a question about music, unless you have access to the Library of Congress, and a degree in research.

I love the laughter on many of the recent threads. There is nothing like opening up a thread and howling madly until all the pressures of the day just melt away.

I love the idea that people here are supporting this place by planning calendars and CD's. That's old homegrown community from my POV, and what a hell of a worthy cause...keeping the one of the oldest traditions alive in this day of immediate knowledge through the web.

I love what I have learned here. And I learn something new each and every time I log on.

I love hearing about others successes...when a new CD is released, when someone gets a gig, when someone learns a new instrument. It makes me feel all the more like it's not too late for me to grow beyond where I am musically as well.

I love hearing about 'Catters trips. When someone will be in town, and I might actually get a chance to hear the music that is behind the posts.

And much, much more.

Lots of negative stuff here lately, so lets talk about why we're here.....who wants to start??? Uh, well, ok, me!!

I've been coming around here for a while now and LOTS of good stuff has happened....like, got the lyrics of a song I couldn't find in the DT....I was pointed to the DT when I asked for a song that WAS in there!....I met some awesome friends who someday I SWEAR I will meet in person!!....I got a great gift from across the pond over the holidays including a shirt that I finally lost enough weight to wear (and I wear it proudly!). I've consoled, I've been consoled, I've laughed (or is that lol'd?) and I've made some laugh. I've prayed and worried for Spaw when he was in the hospital a while back and about cried when I knew everything was gonna be OK, AND I NEVER EVEN MET THE MAN!!! There are others who I think about often who I know struggle with ailments but always seem to find something good to add here. I remember all of that stuff even though a lot of it is from way back cause I remember the good, the bad gets forgotten quickly......
