Subject: RE: BS: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: Peg Date: 12 Jun 02 - 10:57 AM aw, darn I thought you were moving to Boston!! :~( Best of luck with the new job; sounds wonderful. Moving from Hawaii to Oahu? Isn't this a bit like moving from the French Riviera to the Italian Riviera? enjoy and be well, peg p.s. I gave up coffee temporarily because of my back problem but I think when I start again I will celebrate with some Kona!

Subject: RE: BS: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: CarolC Date: 12 Jun 02 - 01:55 AM Are there different climates and weather patterns on the different islands Mark? Will the conditions be substantially different where you're going than what you experience where you are now? |

Subject: RE: BS: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: Mark Cohen Date: 12 Jun 02 - 01:44 AM kat, when I moved from Philadelphia to Portland, Oregon, when people would ask me if I missed the four seasons (in the Northwest the seasons are summer and rain), I would tell them, "I only miss two of them, and they weren't very long!" Your friend is welcome to the New England winters! And there are definitely seasons in Hawaii, they're just even more subtle than in the NW. I can handle that. Now I'll be leaving an incredibly beautiful place, that gets an average of 160 inches of rain a year...life is just a series of tradeoffs, isn't it? The offer for a Mudcat Hawaii gathering is most definitely still open. And if the new owner of my former house and macadamia nut orchard north of Hilo still isn't living there or renting it out, maybe I can arrange for us to have it there after all! Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: katlaughing Date: 11 Jun 02 - 10:55 AM I'll tell you what the weather is like, Noreen. My friend tells about her friend, from New England, who moved to Hawaii. Things went well for several years. She missed the seasons of the year, but it was so beautiful there. Then one day her husband came home and found her washing the same dish, over and over, in the sink in front of a window with an impossibly perfect, lush view of Nature at its best. She had a glazed look in her eyes and she was repeating, "Another beautiful damn day in Hawaii. Another beautiful damn day in Hawaii!" over and over. She just couldn't take the lack of Spring, Autumn, as she'd known them in New England, to which they returned shortly after.*bg* Me, I am fascinated with the pix I've seen of a Unity church there with open sides and little birds, etc. which join in in the service. That's more like it, imo!:-) |

Subject: RE: BS: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: Steve in Idaho Date: 11 Jun 02 - 09:23 AM And no "On-call" is the very best. As one who works in a military hospital all I can say is you will certainly enjoy it. The downside is the turnover. Every two years everyone you know will be gone - replaced by the folks coming in. Enjoy -

Subject: RE: BS: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 11 Jun 02 - 08:07 AM Good luck house-hunting, unless you have already found something. The city of Mililani (I have friends there) isn't too far from Tripler and may still be a little less expensive. He is a commercial pilot and has to go to the airport. But I don't know the rush hour patterns, having only been there to absorb warmth. Listen to the guy who plays uke with the Ke'au (sp?) Crater Boys- really good. |

Subject: RE: BS: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: Mark Cohen Date: 11 Jun 02 - 03:49 AM Yeah, yeah, yeah, you ladies are all talk.... Somehow I doubt I'm going to be able to find a place that's 50 yards from the ocean like this one, but I hope at least to have a spare bedroom! And I won't be able to take guests on a tour of an active volcano--you'll have to make do with shopping in Waikiki or surfing the North Shore. Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: BS: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: Genie Date: 11 Jun 02 - 02:28 AM What a relief to find you're not leaving the Islands, Mark! Not that Seattle wouldn't welcome you back, of course, but when I saw your thread title, I thought, "Oh, rats! There goes the Hawaii Mudcat Gathering!" It's still on, isn't it? Genie §;- ) P.S., Now you'll have more time to play with the humu-humu nuku-nuku apua'a, right? |

Subject: Mark is leaving Hawaii... From: Mark Cohen Date: 10 Jun 02 - 11:52 PM ....and moving to Oahu! I've just accepted a position as a full-time developmental pediatrician at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. The good news is I don't have to join the Army. The better news is I will be working regular hours with NO NIGHT CALL! I'll be working primarily with school-age children with ADHD and other learning/behavior problems, in a multidisciplinary team setting, and also teaching pediatric and family practice residents. And they have contradances in Honolulu, and maybe even a song circle or two! And I'll finally have time to take ukulele lessons, and maybe even write some songs! Of course, it means I'll be leaving all my patients and their families, and leaving this incredible island...but nothing's perfect. Aloha, Mark PS, for those who are confused by the thread title, the island I live on now is the Island of Hawaii, also called the Big Island. If you look at a map of Hawaii, it's the big one (!) at the lower right. Honolulu is on the island of Oahu, which is the second from the left (third if you count tiny Ni'ihau). |
