Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Bat Goddess Date: 24 Jun 02 - 02:47 PM I've got the 23 CD Art Explosion set (Platinum) -- plus other stuff I've accumulated, both in e-form and copyright-free images in Dover books. Dover, by the way, has most of their stuff now on CD, so you buy the book AND get the high res electronic files. (Mine are from before that convenience, so I now scan them to use them whereas previously I statted them to use in a paste-up -- ain't computers grand?) Linn |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 24 Jun 02 - 02:40 PM In the past I've been reduced to tracing the outlines of a photograph onto clear film, copying that, cutting and glueing (and tippexing) to get a clear line drawing of a musician or instrument. Maybe we should start up our own Mudcat Clipart Gallery... make more funds for the Mudcat by 'selling' them like the ArtToday.com site. LTS |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 24 Jun 02 - 11:47 AM Not exactly clip art, but several of the on-line music catalogues have photographs of instruments and even people playing them - try hobgoblin.com for example. R |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: GUEST,Foe Date: 24 Jun 02 - 11:31 AM I've been making posters for a local (Maryland) Song Circle and have found photos at the Library of Congress American Memory site, The Denver Public Library site, and others. When you get there put a key word in the search box. I also just go to Google and in the search box put "photo +fiddle (or banjo or guitar or musicians, etc)" and have found some nice old photos that I print off and then cut and glue (the old fashioned way) and run off copies on card stock on the copier. |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Bob Bolton Date: 24 Jun 02 - 09:07 AM G'day again rich-joy, The artwork culled from my old Singabout files does include a few useful drawings of singers ... from the first Journal of Australian Folk Lore (1956 - 1967). As I am the current Publications Editor for the Bush Music Club (for the past 30 year ... ! ... ? ...!) I use these quite often. I would not mind some of them seeing the light in other reasonably appropriate places. I also have a lot of good, public domain, stuff found in the IMSI Masterclips graphics files (mentioned above by "Bat Goddess", who must have their 250,001 image collection (3 CDs). I have this, plus their 500,001 image lot ... 28 CDs! (But lower res. images of the Dover stuff!) PM me an e-mail address and I'll run a few (relatively low res. versions of) images past you to see what you are after. Regards, Bob Bolton |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Mudlark Date: 23 Jun 02 - 06:37 PM A good basic clip art service is ArtToday.com They have lots of musical instruments, dover reprints, illustrations from old books, all copyright free. The service does cost, but it's nominal...$20 US /yr, and it loads fairly quickly. |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Jun 02 - 10:45 AM Remember that what rich-joy needs is high enough resolution line art so that it prints well -- most of the stuff available on-line is very low res. Looks good on the screen, but not when printed -- especially if it needs to be enlarged. Can you use TIFs? I've got a fair amount I can put on CD and mail to you. PM me. Linn |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Genie Date: 23 Jun 02 - 10:33 AM Glad you posted this query, Rich. I've acquired a pretty big collection of clip-art floppy disks and CDs over the years, but there's hardly anything relating to music of any sort in the lot! All sorts of drawings of puppies, teddy bears, sports scenes, cars, trees, etc., but no musical staves, no clefs, no music notes, no guitars or banjos [much less a drawing of someone playing one]. I could draw the stuff myself [and in fact have some of my own cartoons and sketches I could use, as well as photos], but I don't have a scanner to put these things into the computer. Not a permanent or insurmountable problem, but with all the images that I stumble onto all the time on line, wouldn't you think there'd be something that relates to music? I'm always being offered free screen savers, free e-cards, etc. Some free music related clip art would be welcome. Genie |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Sorcha Date: 23 Jun 02 - 10:00 AM I found mostly just instruments; nothing with people actually playing. Check these out: Cute bass fiddle here. Couple of fiddles here. Also, we have a memeber, CarolC,who is a GREAT pen and ink person. Perhaps if you PM'd her, she could whip up something cute and original? |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Bat Goddess Date: 23 Jun 02 - 09:35 AM My collection that I've acquired for over 30 years are mostly line art from Dover books and other copyright free sources. I also manufactured a line of folk music rubber stamps (The Rubbersmith) back in the '80s, produced mostly from these sources. More recently (meaning the past 10 years) I've used a line art clip art collection on 3 CDs that my former place of employment purchased around 8 years ago. Unfortunately, I can't remember the company ('tho I can check it sometime in the next couple days). The Art Explosion electronic clip art collections have a decent collection of music line art in the "Classic Images" section. They're available from Nova Development www.novadevcorp.com. They market huge general interest collections (the one I have is 250,000 images on 26 CDs), but they do have a decent line art collection included besides the color and vector art. Linn |

Subject: RE: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: Bob Bolton Date: 23 Jun 02 - 06:53 AM G'day rich-joy,
There isn't much around! I have, over the past 30 years tended to collect appropriate illustrations from sources such as the Dover "Clip Art Books" and "Artists' Resources" ... or else from older magazines (particularly Singabout and
What I then still needed, I either drew myself, or had other artistic friends draw for me. A lot of what I drew myself is, more or less in the "logo' area and is dedicated to the groups for which it was done, but I do have a good archive of suitable illustrations for Australian themes. If this interests you, PM me and I can arrange a selection of images (since a lot of my stuff gets 'filched' around Australian folk publications anyway ... and nobody makes any money out of it!

Subject: Help! Clip Art for Folkies!! From: rich-joy Date: 23 Jun 02 - 02:49 AM I know I run the risk of people telling me to go and learn how to use a Search Engine, BUT!! Can anyone recommend to me some good sites for Clip Art with a FOLK MUSIC bent perhaps??? I don't want animated or colour stuff, but good old black-and-white drawings / pictures that I can print out or 'puter-use to make flyers and posters for the local Folk Club and group concerts etc. etc. I don't have unlimited access to The Net - I'm on a country connection where I pay by the minute and it drops out with monotonous regularity, plus pages are slow to load. I did try putting "clip art AND music" into Google and it came up with about 252,000 pages, but I only went into the first couple, which took ages to change and were mostly moving colour pics. Then I got dropped out, which I find is just a tad frustrating ... So, rather than try and re-invent the wheel, I thought I'd try asking the help of my Mudcat Family ... Cheers! R-J |
