And, of course, a brief stint as "No 2" in "The Prisoner"

R.I.P

One of my favorites. His clarity of thought was most admired, and, his very dry humor got to me also....no grass, no flowers, no leaves...November. So long Horace.

The quote that I liked from Leo McKern, I'm not sure whether it was as himself or as Rumpole, was something along the lines of: "There is not a single pleasure in life that is worth abstaining from to gain an extra six months in a nursing home in Worthing."

Carpe diem!

So often these days glamour seems to be all that is needed for success. Leo McKern didn't need glamour, he had wit and talent. Now those qualities are even rarer.

May the libations flow freely wherever he now resides.

Alan

I've always hoped that if I ever get prosecuted for anything I'd have Rumpole to defend me.

In the obituary on the radio, they said he really was a lovely man to work with.

If a truly great actor does not seem to be acting outside him/herself, he was truly great.

The death has been announced of the actor Leo McKern at his home in Bath. Born in Sidney, Australia in 1920, his most famous role was probably as Rumpole in the television series "Rumpole of the Bailey" which ran from 1978 to 1992. He was also "No. 2" in the series "The Prisoner." He had a string of film roles appearing in such classics as "A Tale of Two Cities" (1958); "A Man for All Seasons" (1966); "Ryan's Daughter" (1975)and "The Omen" (1976) among many others. He won the Australian Film Award and the London Film Critics Award as Best Actor in the 1986 film "Travelling North." Farewell Leo and "goodnight, Sweet Prince."
