Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: Hillheader Date: 27 Apr 03 - 04:07 AM Was that "Mainer" or "Minger"? (UK joke - nearly). Story is that Old George had Dan Quayle as his VP only because Young George was too stupid to stand. Is that correct? Also, the CIA were under instructions that if Old George had a heart attack their first job was to shoot Quayle. I know, people who live in glass houses (we elected Thatcher AND Blair) should not have a crap with the light on, but it does show that we may differ in size from the US of A but we can be just as stupid when it comes to voting! Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: kendall Date: 26 Apr 03 - 10:44 PM I insulted Texas? How? Is the truth an insult? |

Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 26 Apr 03 - 07:11 PM But I'd say we've probably got more traffic roundabouts in Harlow alone than you have in the whole of the USA! |

Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: artbrooks Date: 26 Apr 03 - 03:44 PM Gee, Doug...I agree that LBJ had his points, but great? And who were the other two? How about this one? There are more Irish in the US (22,721,252 in the 1990 census) than in Ireland (4 million in the Republic and 1.5 million in Northern Ireland). |

Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: DougR Date: 26 Apr 03 - 02:20 PM There you go again insulting the good old state of Texas, Kendall! The state that has provided us two great presidents, and one that was so-so! That word "if." You know, of course, the dog would have caught the rabbit if it hadn't stopped to pee. :>) DougR |

Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: Murray MacLeod Date: 26 Apr 03 - 01:29 PM "Well maybe they'd like to know that Vancouver is bigger than Texas and that there is a ranch in Vancouver that will take you three days to ride across" Yeah, my Grandad used to own a horse like that ........ |

Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: Metchosin Date: 26 Apr 03 - 01:06 PM Well maybe they'd like to know that Vancouver is bigger than Texas and that there is a ranch in Vancouver that will take you three days to ride across. At least according to some text books that made their appearance in British Columbia schools in the middle 60's. Seems the previous social studies texts were thought to have a British bias, so the "powers that be" thought they would get the new texts from an American company.*BG* |

Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: Sorcha Date: 26 Apr 03 - 12:55 PM We were just trying to explain to some of the Yookers just how big the US is.......... |

Subject: RE: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: kendall Date: 26 Apr 03 - 12:51 PM And you point is? Canada is much bigger than the USA, and Russia has 11 time zones. Once when I was in the service, a guy from Texas was yapping about the size of the state, and I commented that a lot of nothing is still nothing. Another interesting fact; if you cut Alaska in half, Texas would be the THIRD largest state. |

Subject: BS: UK/USA - statistics From: MMario Date: 26 Apr 03 - 10:28 AM in the chatroom last night we were trying to describe/compare the USA with the UK in terms that were easier to understand... The ENTIRE UK (The complete island of Great Britain plus Northern Ireland and a few associated Island groups) would fit within the state of Oregon - which is the 9th largest of the 50 states. The US as a whole is 38.5 times larger then the UK. Scotland PLUS Wales PLUS Northern Ireland have a COMBINED population less then the CITY of New York. ENGLAND alone would fit within the state of Louisiana - the 31st in size. Louisiana is a bit over 51,000 sqare miles, England a bit over 50,000 sqare miles. Connecticut is about the size of Northern Ireland. There are two states smaller. Wales is about the size of New Jersey. there are but three states smaller. Scotland has the population of Arizona - which is the 20th state in terms of population Wales the population of Mississippi - the 31st state in terms of population England itself has a higher population than any one of the US states: but California alone has a polulation over half that of the entire UK |
