Have to agree, Spaw. Especially when the thread above is about Mexican food.

I have a book of these lateral puzzles, and I use them in my class, especially the classes with young men/late adolescent males. For some reason they find them fascinating and I can shut them up miraculously for five minutes or more just by reading out one of the puzzles.

I don't remember one about 3 smells but I can look through it and see if it is there. It doesn't have an index unfortunately.

I gave my class the "music stopped" one only last week.

Those are fun, alison. I've heard some of them. A little terse, although you can certainly jazz up the story. But no smells!

Aloha,
Mark

Well I found a dozen places on the internet which contain the phrase "three smells". One insults Germans, one insults Jews, one is pornographic and the rest talk about the smells of war or dubious scientific research into the susceptibilities of women to olfactory stimuli.

But none of these qualifies as a riddle, really! So I'm afraid I can't help you, Mark!

Yes, I know that one, Susan. Another one is, "The music stopped and he died." That was one of Dad's favorites. Check the other thread for a couple more.

Aloha,
Mark

(Still looking for the 3 smells story. Not a joke or a shaggy dog story, it would be a mystery, with a guessable twist.)

I was mixed up-- the bicycles one doesn't start that way, but there is one that does-- "If he had seen the sawdust, he wouldn't have died." THAT one I remember!

The only one I can think of that fits is the American in a Park in England looking at three statues trying to work out what they are.A
local gives the explanation-Statue One is a reproduction of Rodins
'The Thinker',statue two is the The local Explorer ( a Man Pointing to the far horizon)and statue three is a War memorial- A statue of a man in miltary uniform saluting.
The American says 'I had worked it out a bit different - Who Shit?
He Shit !   I Shit !

No, but if he had seen the bicycles, he wouldn't have died. And I am not sure exactly how that one goes now that I think of it!

Gee I'd love to hear them all, Mark, and if you want to play some in PMs I'm game-- I've only heard a few so it would be fun to work at them.

On another thread (here), I asked if anyone had heard a story that my Dad had once known but had forgotten. I'll ask it again here in case the title jogs someone's memory.

The story is actually a puzzle, the kind my dad called a "logical problem." It's told in the form of a short mystery, and the object is for the listener to guess the point of the story ("How did he die?" "Why did she do that?") by asking questions that can be answered by yes or no.

(For example, the one about the man who lived on the 50th floor of an apartment building; when he came home from work every day, he got off the elevator on the 40th floor and walked up 10 flights. Why? He was a dwarf and couldn't reach higher than the 40th floor button.)

My dad had a notebook full of these problems, usually annotated by just a phrase or two that would jog his memory. But one of those phrases didn't jog his memory--he had forgotten the story completely.
So I'm trying to find out if anybody has heard this particular logical problem.

The phrase is: "The 3 Smells."

Does that ring any bells with anyone?

Aloha,
Mark
