Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST Date: 27 Nov 03 - 07:23 AM On and on this thread goes! Mindlessly, meandering its tedious way through the leery back-streets of the world of the Hullcatter! Please let someone take it by its dubiously sticky little hand and steer it towards the nether regions of BSdom! |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST,thedup Date: 24 Nov 03 - 12:13 PM I agree with GUEST & GUEST-Thornton. There are already 2 threads filled with familial chatter why contaminate this one. Any more banal conversation and it would deserve to be relegated to BS as its music forum content is nil at present. |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: sweetfire Date: 23 Nov 03 - 02:25 PM You're getting really boring now Curtis, nobody gives a shit bout spellin! There, i've spelt two words above incorrectly, and i've sworn, but do i care? NO!!! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST,Thornton Curtis Date: 22 Nov 03 - 04:10 PM I thought I'd provide general guidance to the problem of provenance of Thornton's postings. Use the general rule – if they are constructed in English and punctuated correctly, they are mine. If they appear to be from infants, they are not. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 21 Nov 03 - 08:12 PM What you lot whinging about? |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Skipjack K8 Date: 21 Nov 03 - 08:06 PM I reluctantly enter the fray, but isn't that 'whingeing', Les? |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Les from Hull Date: 21 Nov 03 - 02:54 PM Yes. You need a space after a full stop and you spelt really incorrectly in another thread. But this is a music site, not a spelling or wingeing site. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST,Thornton Curtis Date: 21 Nov 03 - 11:45 AM Actually, I sometimes wonder if I am too clever for my own good.Do you have any thoughts on this point? |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST,Thornton Curtis Date: 21 Nov 03 - 10:39 AM Sweetfire, had that post have read: "Guest, you are correct. All Hull-based and Beverley-based threads are puerile." You could be forgiven for attributing it to me. As the quality of the English in the posted version is poor, with a spelling error, unnecessary capitals, a redundant exclamation mark, bad sentence construction and a failure to capitalise the initial letters of the two place-names, then plainly someone else wrote it. Unfortunately it is one of your serial co-correspondents. I am happy to point this out. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: sweetfire Date: 21 Nov 03 - 10:08 AM Dont read them then!!!! And, just one question TC, if you dislike them so much why do you still persist on postin on them??? |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST,Thornton Curtis Date: 21 Nov 03 - 09:28 AM Guest, you are correct. ALL hull/beverley based threads are peurile! |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 21 Nov 03 - 02:16 AM GUEST-I'd just like to echo what Les said about you visiting Hull, as I stated earlier in this thread, this is not a "Mudcat event", but is open to everybody, whilst there are dozens of Mudcat members living in around Hull, everybody [local, non local, singer, musician, listener etc] is made equally welcome. If you do get chance to visit us, please do so, it is every Thursday night, and starts about 9 ish, drinks are cheap, and free food is provided [curries pizzas etc]. If you need directions or any other info, the venues phone number, and my mobile number are both posted near the begining of this thread. jOhn |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Les from Hull Date: 20 Nov 03 - 08:35 PM I should explain that most of the people in the Hull/East Riding/North Lincolnshire threads know each other, play music with each other, and drink and chat with each other. So there's a bit of banter. I know we could be quieter, but if you do have the opportunity to visit Hull and meet some of these fine people and hear their music, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Les |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST Date: 20 Nov 03 - 12:09 PM As someone who actually might want to know about the Hull club I don't want to be rude but do have to agree with the guest who complains about the use of these threads. Tt seems as if any thread with what john9 would call 'local' information is just getting ridiculous... I can't be bothered to read a load of drivel and private in jokes in search of a small amout of possibly interesting information. I used to wonder about Punch the Horse for example... maybe I'd get a chance to visit the area and see them someday., but their threads have definitely put me off!! Maybe the Hull club is meeting tonight... if it's half as boring as these threads have become I won't bother... and won't miss much... and if anyone complains that I'm trying to 'spoil things for other people' can I point out that of the 18 previous posts regarding the November 20th club meeting no-one has actually said wether or not they will be there! |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST,William Ootton Date: 20 Nov 03 - 06:40 AM I am shocked at the exchange above. Having recently, as has been my habit for the past 30 years, dined with Thornton Curtis I can only offer the opinion that a less 'sad' individual one meets only rarely. He/she is a jolly soul, much given to hilarious gossip offered without a hint of malice and always illuminated by TCs profoundly-held beliefs on the human condition. To know him/her is to love him/her. Please, please don't judge the book by its cover. Read the reviews, discuss it with someone who claims to have read it and then, and only then, feel free to judge. It really is a terrible assault on the ancient pastoral ways of North Lincolnshire cafe society to have to endure the gallumphing assaults of townsfolk on one so dear to us all. We were joined, after an extensive luncheon, by the one called Skipjack. He told us things. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: smallpiper Date: 20 Nov 03 - 05:35 AM Mudcat rule one don't encourage flamers or trolls. Just ignore mr curtis if you can and sweetfire that was very rude, it dosn't cost anything to be nice even to a waste of space. |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: sweetfire Date: 19 Nov 03 - 01:33 PM Why is it that you always get one wanker wanting to spoil things for other people... Look, it's simple, if you dont like what we are posting then why waste your time reading it? i know why...because you must be a sad bastard and can't stand other people having a laugh. Just go and find a thread you like and stop bothering people. |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 12 Sep 03 - 09:46 AM Hi Brid, unfortunately I didn't make it last night either, but I have just been speaking on the phone to Bassic, he tells me that it was very quiet, and numbers were way down on last week. I know people are busy, and many people work shifts etc and have other commitments, but it would be nice to see lots of people there. I will repeat my request to anyone that has been, PLEASE give your feedback, ie what did you think of it, venue, format, etc. Please also give your ideas, whilst I have booked the room, [that's the easy bit!], I have no experience of organising anything like this, so I NEED advice! To anyone that has not been yet, please support it if you can, it is FREE entry, and we have full use of a recently refurbished concert room. jOhn |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Bassic Date: 11 Sep 03 - 06:36 AM OOps! That should have read.......If you want to be part of that process or just listen/sing/play/have a bear, then come along. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Bassic Date: 11 Sep 03 - 06:33 AM At the moment the club is running under the (not very)original but descriptive working title of "Hull Folk Club" and is happening every thursday. Last week was a great success and seems to be filling a gap for such a venue in the City. It will be nice to get a few more new faces to swell the ranks and hopefully pursuade a few of the top local musicians and performers to come out and give us a try!! There were lots of ideas floating around last week and I am sure they will start to form themselfs into a plan of action with some sort of a "programme" in the next few weeks. If you want to be part of that process or just listen/sing/play have a bear then come along. You will be very welcome!! |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Cavia_P Date: 11 Sep 03 - 05:41 AM jOhn, Does the New Folk Club 9in Hull have a name? and Is it on again this evening ? Regards, Cavia_P |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 06 Sep 03 - 05:09 PM Thanks Linda. Did everyone else that went enjoy it? All comments/feedback, suggestions etc are welcome. Hopefully it will be a sucsess. Thanks Mick for doing such a good job of running the first night, it was good to see a few new faces there, feedback on the night was good, everyone said they enjoyed it. There is a few ideas we could try out, to get people going/keep interest ie= There is a lot of folk music experts locally such as Steve Gardham, Dr Chris Bearman, Jim Eldon, Henry Aryton, Harry Gurevitch etc. Many of these have written books, had academic papers published etc, we could maybe invite some of them there occasionaly to give a talk. Beginners Workshops, in various instruments, Singing, and or Songwriting workshops. Theme Nights, ie Irish Night, Scottish Night etc. Folk Music Quiz, and raffles during the break each night. Any other ideas are welcome. To let people know about it, we could put posters in music shops and places like that. |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 04 Sep 03 - 07:39 PM I just got back, it was brilliant! Great to see so many people there, there were 22 of us, not bad for a first night! A mixture of mudcatters ans local folkies, there was Bassic, Beardy Bill Sables Brid Widder me 9jOhn from Ull Linda Kelly Les from Hull Ossonflags Ploughflyer Rambling Rose and the rest was a mixture of local folkies. I would like to thank everybody for going, especially them that travelled from far way Sorry about the confusion over the room, but we got into the booked room in the end! It was a good night, loads of differnt songs, and some nice traditional tunes from Bassic, and his friend, [that scottish bloke with the bagpies, i forgot his name now], and a bit of world music from Soo with her African drum. I know it's not really fair to pick out individuals, in case I miss anyone out, but the best bits for me was hearing Mick 9 Ossonflags), sing Sparehand, and Bill singing Rubenstein Remembers. It was good to see so many people there, I felt a bit gilty for not singing anything myself, but my singing is rubbish, and if I start singing, they will all run away! I might sing a short song, or read a poem or soimething in a few weeks, if i feel brave enough. If you enjoyed it, hopefully we will see you in there again, If you didn't enjoy it [for whatever reason], say so, and give your ideas/suggestions etc. All comments, feedback etc is very welcome. jOhn |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 02 Sep 03 - 02:23 PM Cheers Mick. 9Mick is not a folkie!, but I know he is a good singer, lead singer with Punch the Horse, [best band down our street], and he is keen to see traditional singing encouraged, and I know he will pass on any relavent tips to beginners] i'm sure Les will do the same for any musicians. I saw Maggie this morning, 9Mrs Les), and she is taking her friend called Karen, and telling other people about this. I realised today why Maggie is called The Fragrant One, 9 She is an aromatherapissed, and is an Indian Head Massager as well) I agre with Les, ie if anybody goes and doesn't like it, they should say why, and give their ideas. This is a new thing, and we are open to ideas/suggestions. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: ossonflags Date: 02 Sep 03 - 01:08 PM John, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease do not call me a folkie. I will try and get there round about 9.30ish but all depends on shift. We had a long discussion about your venture at the Whitby fest and you know I, along with others, will give you all the support and encouragement you need.I put the word around both at Whitby and the Shanty fest. so expect to see a few. |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Les from Hull Date: 02 Sep 03 - 10:21 AM I'll try to be there at 8.30 so if anybody fancies a few tunes, a chat or a bit if a muck about - see you there. I have to agree with jOhn (no relation!). This venue will be what we all want, or rather what each of us wants, as far as is possible so that it fits in with what others want. So please be as 'vocal' as possible about what you like so that you can be 'instumental' in providing the local folk community with a venue that fits all needs. Don't just go once, dislike it and then not go again without telling others what you disliked. Les |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 02 Sep 03 - 09:47 AM Yes, it's 9PM start Beardy.Though Les suggested to me that a beginers session/workshop from 8.30 till 9.00 could be a good idea, I agreed with his suggestion, so if anyone is intersted in this idea, you could go at 8.30pm. I have recieved a few PM's about this from various people, asking about the format, who are we going to book? etc. The format is whatever people prefer, there is a small stage there, but nobody is forced to use it, I'm not sure yet, who we are going to book, it depends on interest.I have decided that the first 4 weeks wil be singers/musicians nights and will be free admission to get people interested. I would like to stress that this is not a Mudcat event, but an event where Mudcatters along with everyone else are welcome. So if any non member is reading this, you will be as welcome as anyone else. I would also like to stress that all singers/musicians regardless of age, ability or nationality are welcome. There is a large Kurdish community in Hull, many of whom are musicians, also my boss [Bangladeshi], plays the flute, I have told him he is welcome to come along and play a couple of tunes. Also if anyone is just starting out in folk singing/ playing and wants an oppertunity to have a go at stuff in front of an appreciative audience then feel free, many of the folkies around here Les, Mick etc have got years of experience, and I'm sure they will pass on any tips/advice etc. I would like to publicly thank everybody that has offered their support, a couple of people have refered to this as my new folk club, it isn't, it's everybodys! All I did was book the room! There will be no rules as such, but I would like to politely request that the tables on the left as you walk in be reserved for non-smokers, [the tables on the right have windows above them that we can open]. Hopefully see you all in there! jOhn |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 05 Aug 03 - 08:48 PM PS-Malcolm and Bill-you are obviously both welcome there, sorry I can't pay you for going, at least for the time been, but as I said earlier=the landlord is keen on music, and does his paying gigs on Friday and Saturday, so if you go and do a spot and the landlord likes you, you might get a paying gig out of it, [not sure what he pays, or what you charge, discus it between yourselves], anyway = i think you live near each othrr? i know Bill lives near Selby, not sure about Malcom, maybe you could give each other a lift? anyway, be good to see you there.john |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 05 Aug 03 - 08:27 PM Thanks Malcolm and Bill, Bill-my yahoo group seems to have locked up recently, not sure whats going on there! I remember you are a moderator there, are you able to unlock it? PS-do yahoo ban you for swearing? there was a bloke spamming my site, trying to sell some astrolgy rubbish, I told him to F..K off, i havent been able to post since. I will get on to yahoo ltd and see whats going om.cheers.john |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 05 Aug 03 - 08:20 PM Thanks everybody, JOhn and Murray etc-you would be very welcome, the bear is ok, and as its a social club the prices are slightly cheaper than the pubs.I work in the indian take-away opposite the place, so I will try to persaude my boss to give us a pot of curry at cost price or as near as possible to that, for our supper. I've been working there 9 years now so I might be able to persaude him to give us a free pan of curry as sponsorship/advertising! I'll see what I can do. As I said earlier, I have found the venue, the rest of it is up to you ie if on a certain night they are all shanty singers or singer songwriters then thats what it will be for that night. I would like it to be easy going and a similar format to the recent temporary Folk Club at the Beverely Folk Festival, that Linda and Mick and Roger did such a good job of organising, ie anyone that wants to have a go, be they singers, or musicians is given a chance and made welcome and encouraged. I hate rules and don't intend having any, but would simply ask that any singer/musician that wants to do a spot is given the chance to do so. So wether you sing, play or just listen, lets see you in there! |

Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: GUEST,cittern Date: 05 Aug 03 - 03:18 PM Great to hear of a new club. Will try to make it along the M62 one Thursday night (can't make it on the 4th due to gig commitments in Derbyshire). Would love to be able to persuade you to put on Julie Ellison as one of the guests! Contact me via John@Adaxia.com if you wish. As regards advice on running a club, you could do worse than taking a look at the Rivelin Folk Club in Sheffield. You couldn't to meet a nicer bunch of people, very welcoming, great sense of humour, well attended singers nights. No door charge just a collection and they raise enough to have the occasional guest. They have a website at http://www.dgbiz.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk |
Subject: RE: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: greg stephens Date: 05 Aug 03 - 02:19 PM John, you obviously find very good advice on mudcat. At quarter past five you started a thread asking advice on running a folk club, and here you are less than two hours later doing it. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!! |
Subject: New Folk Club 9in Hull) From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 05 Aug 03 - 02:09 PM I am opening a Folk Roots and Accoustic Club in Hull shortly. It will be at The Marlborough Club, Chanterlands Avenue, Hull. every Thursday evening, starting on the 4th of September. Its a good venue, with a good concert room with stage. I have spoken privately to a few people that have kindly volounteered to get involved they are= Bassic-He organised a music festival a few years ago. Linda Kelly-Ran the Folk Club at Beverley Festival Ossonflags-Has been involved with various clubs over the years. Due to work commitments etc these people will not be there every week The idea I have is that ALL singers and musicians and listeners will be welcome.Admission will be free to encourage people to go, but we might have a raffle to raise money to book acts, perhaps starting off with cheap local acts. Stuff like this will be sorted out at the first night, I hate meetings and commitees and stuff, and would like to keep things informal, but perhaps a quick ideas session would be an idea, for people to give their ideas? The landlord [Chris] is easy going and supports live music and books acts, he has given us the room for free. I have found the venue, and intend to promote it, but the format and music depends really on who turns up, though everyone will get a chance, and beginers wether singers or musiciasns will be encouraged. Hopefully see you all there! jOhn |
