Speaking of which, most North Americans mispronounce Tish Hinojosa's last name, saying "Hi-No-Joe-Sah". It's actually pronounced "Een-No-Ho-Sah" in Spanish.

Then there was Ava Gardner. We say it "Ay-Va". The Spanish say it "Ah-Va". When they want to say "Ay-Va" they spell it "Eva", which we pronounce "Ee-Va". Ava's parents probably figured that Eva was too common a name, so they named her Ava, little realizing that Spanish-speaking people pronouce the name Eva the way we pronounce Ava and don't say "Eva" at all unless you spell it "Yva" or "Iva". Confused yet?

The other day a tourist from Israel pronounced 'Galilee' as
'Gah-lil-ee, instead of as 'Gal-ah-lee' as I'd been taught. Assuming that her pronunciation is the one they use, they'd be correct in saying I was doing the same thing as your 'Honn Buy-ne '.

I loved words from an early age- I well remember as a kid spouting- and being laughed at for- FAT ah goo and pictureskew.:)

The thread on "Jones in Welsh" triggered something in me .

Have you ever heard the way non-English speakers pronounce famous people's names ?

Some examples from Spain:

Honn Buy-ne ( John Wayne )

Clark E-Gab-li   ( Clark Gable )

Say-an Connery ( Sean Connerry )

Paco Hones ( pronounced Pa -Cojones )   ( Tom Jones - they are being

cheeky here because cojones are testicles )
