THE OLD MAN

The tears have all been shed now. We've said our last goodbyes.
His soul's been blest and he's laid to rest, and it's now I feel alone.
He was more than just a father: a teacher, my best friend.
He can still be heard in the tunes we shared when we play them on our own.

CHORUS: Oh, I never will forget him, for he made me what I am.
Though he may be gone, memories linger on, and I miss him, my old man.

As a boy he'd take me walking through mountain field and stream,
And he showed me things not known to kings, and secret between him and me,
Like the colour of the pheasant as it rises in the glen,
And how to fish and make a wish down by the holly tree. CHORUS

I thought he'd live for ever, he was so big and strong,
But the minutes fly and the time goes by for a father and a son,
And suddenly when it happened, there was so much left say;
No second chance to give him thanks for all that he had done. CHORUS

Hope that these are the words that you are seeking. This beautiful song was written by Phil Coulter and recorded by The Fureys also by
John Mc Dermott

Thanks George,
I have no luck making those clickies.
John McDermott also recorded a beautiful version of this song .
Finbar's is my favourite though. He has not got McDermott's vocal range but he imparts so much emotion into the song that it brings tears to the eye.
I was at a Furey's concert at the Cohn about 15 years ago. After Finbar sang that song I went to the lobby and bought the tape. I learned the song and still do it at times, especially around Fathers Day.
