Cluin, My (soon to be Ex) Father in Law told me that, in Toronto, in the fairly recent past( lats 30 years) you couldnt drink beer in your own HOME if you were visible from the street!! and there were bye-laws that covered this!!!! and that beer wasnt displayed in in the beer store AT ALL you had to select your beer from a catalog...

Yeah, I remember my Dad talking about those. I doubt it was an actual list, more like the bartenders and liquor store operators knew who couldn't handle their drink and avoided serving them. I don't think that kind of thing goes on much these days, but they will "cut you off" if you get too drunk or rowdy.

Not that it's happened to me... ;)

Cluin - do they still have "Indian Lists" (although they'd probably call them Ethnic Canadian lists now). I gather that at one time people (of any ethnic origin) who had a booze problem would be added to the list to prevent them being sold alcohol.

Unlike the U.K. and U.S., in Ontario, Canada we can't get beer in the grocery store/supermarket. We have to go to a Brewer's Retail outlet of the brewery itself to buy our beer. Lots of them around, though and the laws about beer and liquor retailing have relaxed here since the war. In my Dad's day, you were limited on how often and how much liquor you could buy at a time. Back then, quart bottles of beer were more common than now, though in fewer choices of brands.

Did anyone (apart from me) noticethat, in the grim old days a few years back, when the supermarkets were openly defying the Sunday Trading laws by selling bibles ad fried fish on the Sabbath, they all stuck rigidly to the alcohol licencing requirements? They can only deal with one set of antiquated and pointless laws at a time, it seems.

I always thought that bears crapped in the woods, but I travel via Surbiton every workday, and I've never noticed any woods - life's a bitch - you'll just have to grin and bear it.

Bears?

Waltzing with bears (Parody) Bob Townshend

My Uncle Walter's not right in the head,
"I want to go waltzing with bears" Walter said,
So he went to the zoo and climbed up on a shed,
Jumped in with the bears and he ended up dead.

Eaten by bears, eaten by bears,
Raggy bears, baggy bears, shaggy bears too,
There's nothing on earth anybody could do
And my Uncle Walter, poor Uncle Walter,
My Uncle Walter got eaten by bears.

He went to the zoo in the middle of the night,
Jumped in the bears' cage and turned on the light.
He started to waltz - they started to bite,
And my Uncle Walter got eaten that night.

We begged and we pleaded "Oh, please won't you stay,"
We managed to keep him alive for a day
But the bears all marched in and they took him away,
Now the bears all demand at least one Walt a day.

My Uncle Walter got eaten by bears,
It's a most unbearable state of affairs,
But he left me a fortune so nobody cares
That poor Uncle Walter got eaten by bears.

I know how you feel. I tried to get some instant porridge last week. They wouldn't even let me through those silly round and round doors. So frustrating. Bloody Goldilocks can get her own next time!

And don't ask me for toilet paper! I mean, they are happy for me to advertise the stuff, but will they let me buy it? No. Once those free samples ran out, that was it, back to leaves for this family. It's not so bad in summer when there are lots of dock leaves and things, but now it's all thistles, twigs and dry grass.

Ms. M Bear
Surbiton

Tell me about it, I couldn't get any honey today for love nor money...usually order online , but missed the last delivery slot, hence one very unhappy bear here.

Most supermarkets have a discriminatory policy of not serving bears at any time.

The UK is not England, jOhn, as the licensins (sic) laws are different in Scotland. Could I have two of what you just had?

I rather think that Johns point is that we are taxed to death in this country and are plagued by outdated laws. Ok nowt wrong with having an opinion and as jOhn himself would say this is NOT a spelling site!
