Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: Hrothgar Date: 20 Mar 04 - 10:56 PM I thought the last Irish Gold Medal winner was the lady swimmer who became in a doping controversy. Um, Michelle Smith? Um, er, 1996? |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: Tattie Bogle Date: 19 Mar 04 - 09:50 PM 18 out of 20. Wrong on population, but maybe was counting the sheep and the cows, and Roger Casement, though should have known that as I did Irish history at O level in England over 40 years ago! All good craic nonetheless, looking forward to weekend in Dublin for the Scotland/Ireland rugby next weekend, if not the result. Where's the best place for the music these days?? |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: Wolfgang Date: 18 Mar 04 - 11:33 AM As I stated above 19/20 (proud smile). But I got my guess right and made one of the 'definitely sure' wrong (grinning sheepishly) Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: Fibula Mattock Date: 18 Mar 04 - 11:11 AM no Irishwoman either... ;-) |
|
Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: alanabit Date: 18 Mar 04 - 11:08 AM I should also add that Fibula Mattock's comment, that the date for the Battle of the Boyne (5B), was a little early was quite right. It should have read 1690 of course. The error came in the transfer of a Word file to Mudcat. No Irishman could possibly get any of the answers wrong, but I guess that an American who scored over ten did pretty well. |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: LadyJean Date: 17 Mar 04 - 10:56 PM I don't remember the movie, but there's a scene where the winning hurling team is being carried on board a train, most of them being too badly injured to walk, and an English woman, viewing the scene says, " Is that one of their rebellions?" I've always enjoyed that. |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: Wolfgang Date: 17 Mar 04 - 01:55 PM BTW, this quiz nearly qualifies for the upper half as a song quiz, for nearly all of the target words feature in at least one song posted in Mudcat or in the DT. To give you an idea: Follow this link read the song lyrics right to the last verse and you'll be able to respond question 6. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: Wolfgang Date: 17 Mar 04 - 01:45 PM I'm sure I did get all but one, and even on that one (Liffy Water) I have a good basis for a guess. Now a difficult one, so that the Irish themselves are challenged: When was the last time an Irish man (not: woman, for that's too easy) did win a Olympic Gold Medal? Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: Folkiedave Date: 17 Mar 04 - 12:50 PM As far as I am aware ALL whisky and whiskey is clear after distillation - it is the aging process in barrels that gives it colour - or colourings. I managed the one about when is St. Patrick's Day - the clue was in the title of the quiz. Dave www.collectorsfolk.co.uk |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: Rapparee Date: 17 Mar 04 - 12:44 PM I knew a bunch of the answers, but unless the correct ones are posted I'll never know my score. DougR, clear whiskey is legal. I've got several bottles at home, so if you're around Pocatello, let me know and I'll stand you a drink or two or three or.... (I also bought some white whiskey in Virginia some years ago -- it was labeled "Moonshine" and was made in a legal distillery in Culpepper.) |

Subject: RE: BS: St Patrick's Day Quiz From: DougR Date: 17 Mar 04 - 12:15 PM I saw Poteen for sale when I was in Ireland last September. How could it be so if it is not legal? Good, interesting questions. I knew some, but certainly not all of the answers. Thanks for posting. DougR |
