My sister and I were 16 and 18 the first time we answered phones at a pledge. We were seated next to a woman who was well into her twenties. That night a man we called The Pussy Person called several times. His line was always the same, "How many hairs have you got on your etc."
The older woman would scream, "YOU MUST BE SICK!" every time she got him. My sister and I thought he was hilarious. I kept telling him I'd left my cat at home, while my sister said, "Just a minute while I count, one two three....."
At every pledge, men call up and ask the women who answer, "Which one are you?" My answer was always, "I'm the nun." (I'm not. They don't let Presbyterians be nuns.)

What I really hate is the FAKE stuff they put on.

Example, after the News Hour, Tux Man comes on with,
"Say, Jim (chuckle), thanks for filling us in! (chuckle)"
As though he knows Jim Lehrer personally.

And what about those phones? Phones DON'T RING
that way any more. Haven't for 20 years.

Two more weeks of this. Oh well, (whine whine).

Love, Johnny in OKC

Just show commercials.

Several years ago I interviewed for the job of Director of Development for the local PBS station and when asked what I would suggest for improving fundraising efforts I said, "find an alternative to the the endless pledge telecasts." I obviously did not get the job.

Can't blame them, though, I guess because they do raise a lot of money.

You should try answering phones at one of those pledges. I've done it several times. Every pervert in town calls up to try his line on some unsuspecting volunteer.
I used to bring the local S.C.A. to answer phones. We had a man named Neil whose voice was just high pitched enough so they couldn't tell which sex he was. Which meant the pervs would talk to him.
My personal favorite was,
Perv) I have a penis!
Neil) That's nice, so do I.
The perverts generally hung up on Neil.

Yes, Bill, I have noticed that about NPR.
At least they keep the regular shows going.

That was funny about the hair pieces.
Some of the has-been rock bands and doo-
wop groups look pathetic.

During the year they do some really good stuff and years back they showed wonderful things for the fundraisers. Now---sadly--it is the recycled groups with bad hair pieces. Probably the best part of Mighty Wind was its spoof of PBS fund raisers.

I host/produce a radio show on a non commercial station (WFDU, Teaneck NJ) and when we have fund raising we surely do beg, but we try to stay true to what our program is all about---and the specials we do during the year and don't ask for anything.

Good idea about sending in money during the year---though, frankly, I doubt that it will stop the long winded fundraising efforts with the truly awful programming---and then they show it over and over again.

Amergin ~~~ Well it's the only channel I can stand to watch,
and I won't PAY for cable.

Bev and Jerry make a good point.

You know, one of the nice things about Mudcat is checking
back in later, to chortle at your own whining. (I mean mine)

I still like the nature shows on PBS.

Love, Johnny

We would like to encourage people to NOT send in their pledge or money during the PBS begathons. Send money some other time like we do. Responding to that crap only encourages them.

I sit down to relax, turn on the TV ...

and there he is, the guy with the tuxedo and
the giant thermometer.

OH-GOD-PLEASE-NO! It's "festival" time again.
The dreaded pledge drive.

The other night was "Doo-Wop" night, then it's
"Lawrence Welk Salutes America" ... tonight
of course it's Irish Night.

Will this mediocrity never cease? Who do
they think is watching?

I phoned in my pledge; I sent in my money ...
and STILL the pledge drive GOES ON!

The good part is, I get a lot of practicing done.

Love, Johnny
