Subject: RE: BS: Where can I find a special tankard. From: GUEST,Melani Date: 28 Apr 04 - 02:23 PM I may be able to find one pretty similar to that. I do hand-carved leather wraps for pewter tankards, and specialize in custom work. I know my supplier has a skeleton handleed one, but can't remember the price. I'm at work now, but can pm you with details when I get home. If it doesn't come with a skull and crossbones, I can put that or anything else you want on a leather wrap. There would be a pretty long lead time, however, since I am in California and my supplier is in...Sheffield, of course. They all are. |

From: Sorcha Date: 28 Apr 04 - 11:48 AM Well, if you want to wait until I get home, and send money, I can get it for you and only chg you the actual price of shipping....I land home in US on 25 May. It would take a few days to actually get it to me, and another 2 weeks probably to get it to you. PM me if you want to wait that long........pricey tankard, that is. |

Subject: RE: BS: Where can I find a special tankard. From: Nigel Parsons Date: 27 Apr 04 - 05:16 PM Mr Red: but why the glass bottom? Background from earlier thread: "The "taking of the king's/Queen's shilling" was presumed when the Navy "Press-ganged" men from the pubs of an earlier time. Recruitment officers would provide a round of drinks for men who appeared well intoxicated, and a shilling would be found in the bottom of the tankard or in the mouth, hence showing that the men had "Accepted the shilling". The men would wake up the next day, with a hangover, and already at sea. The above practice would not have worked with glasses, but at the time pewter tankards were the norm. This cheap trick led to the development of tankards with glass bottoms, so that the contents could be viewed before imbibing. One enterprising firm has now started producing tankards with a shilling embedded in the transparent base as a reminder of times past. Nigel |

Subject: RE: BS: Where can I find a special tankard. From: Mr Red Date: 27 Apr 04 - 04:54 PM Well GM will you be in green this w/e? I would have thought your stalling would put you in a good position to know a few of the vendors. What about asking Annie, and thence the people who organised the stalls at Bromyard over the years - there were a couple of tankard stalls with a vast array. The skull and skeleton - (nothing in it I guess) but why the glass bottom? |

Subject: RE: BS: Where can I find a special tankard. From: lady penelope Date: 27 Apr 04 - 03:39 PM Alchemy would probably do the skull motif but probably not the glass bottom. As Pixie said, Black Rose in Camden Lock might be one place, but other than that I think you're looking at a custom job. Tim Westwood used to do pewter stuff, he used to be based in Bristol (many moons ago) but I don't know where he is now. TTFN Lady P. |

Subject: BS: Where can I find a special tankard. From: Green Man Date: 27 Apr 04 - 09:34 AM I am looking for a tankard with a skull and crossbones applied to the side. Glass bottomed and with a skeleton figure for the handle. Wierd well yes, but then I am a bit wierd as those of you that know me will attest. I am going to the Upton Upon Severn Fest this weekend where I am in charge of stalls. Greetings to all and long amy you all live. GM |
