If they're prepared to walk a mile down the road, The Poachers Arms in Hope does excellent food (or at least it did a couple of years ago).

The Three Stags head is a classic but the landlord is to say the least a little excentric good food good beer intermittnt opening hours and service with a growl.

Presumptious again but I only have experience of Mrs G and family...

Castleton, in my experience as above, would be more a 'ladies' place in that there are more gift shops and more to do and see by way of attractions. Personaly I prefer going up the high tops where there is bugger all to do but far more to see;-) Before you ladies who do go up the high tops start having a go at me remember I did say it is only in my experience!

There is more by way of accomodation in Castleton as well. Are they staying over? Are they doing any walking? If so what level? Castleton does seem to provide something for all but as I said it is busy. Rightly so I guess because it does have so much! As you said it is a bit 'twee' though. It all depends what your friend is looking for.

How about Hope if that is the area you are looking at? Walking distance from Castleton but more a 'working' village? Or, if accomodation is not as important, as I said before - Edale.

It's 11 girls/women/ladies/females (what is the right term? - I never know), I believe, rather than me.

But at least I have a good sound base for pubs if I'M ever there!

Just about everywhere serves food in Castleton. The Castle wasn't that good the last time we went (although that was some years ago so it may have got better since). But there's plenty of other places. For 11, you'd better book in advance though, or at least in the afternoon, especially in summer or at weekends.

Tell your friend to pop into the Three Stags in Wardlow Mires while he's in the Peaks. Absolutely *the* best pub for beer. It used to be a very good folky pub too, but the regular Saturday night sessions have apparently dried up over the last few years. They'll also do Sunday lunch as well, and the cooking there is just brilliant. Be prepared for the size of the place though - it's tiny! Oh, and it's usually full of dogs as well, so don't go if you're houndophobic. ;-)

Thank you for the help - perhaps if my friend posts here she could ask you more?

It's a group of girl/friends (age range not sure but would think 30+) who are having a girls together weekend to enjoy themselves and have a nice meal. (Perhaps more important than the quality of the beer - though that may be a gross presumption!)

I don't know them apart from it coming up in conversation through work today when I was visiting her office and I thought I'd try and help. Mudcat so often provides a better thing from real people than asking some 'pub forum' or whatever so I thought I would give it a try.

Looking at the sites they either look twee or foreboding so it's great to get a response from someone who has some knowledge.

They all do food if I remember rightly, Nick. We had a party of 30 or so in one many years ago but unfortunateley I can't remember which:-(
The Cheshire Cheese is just on the edge of the village and may appreciate the custom but I an only guessing. There is a Robinsons pub that used to keep their beer realy well, including the lethaly strong draught Old Tom!

Trouble is with Castleton is Summer is that it is so busy. Nags Head or the Church (possibly called the Jolly Rambler - it varies) at Edale across the ridge may be quieter? And there is a rail service to Edale to boot. (Pun intended!) May even see the folk or blues train from Manchester or Sheffield if you are lucky:-)

Does anyone know of a good pub to eat in Castleton in Derbyshire?

A friend is on a walking holiday and would like somewhere reasonable. Something traditional and to cope with 11 to eat at a reasonable price
