The words sort of fit with the other Tara HIll on the Somme, where the Tyneside Irish were decimated on 6th June 1916

Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN YOU WERE SWEET SIXTEEN (from Crosby)
From: s&r
Date: 04 Feb 06 - 06:33 PM

When You Were
Sweet Sixteen

When first I saw the love-light in your eyes,
I dreamed the world held not but joy for me.
And even though we drifted far apart,
I never dream but what I dream of thee.

I love you as I never loved before,
Since first I met you on the village green.
Come to me or my dream of love is o'r,
I love you as I loved you, when you were sweet,
When you were sweet sixteen.

I love you as I never loved before,
Since first I met you on the village green.
Come to me or my dream of love is o'r . . .
I love you as I loved you, when you were sweet,
When you were sweet sixteen.

OK... I was there today... and my map was wrong!!... It was in basically the same position but 1 main road further West..... it is off the N3 (and well signposted from there)..... no signposts on the N2.... funnily enough there is a very good old fort thing at that reference on the N2... but it isn't Tara....

just added that in case anyone else came looking in this thread for directions.....

by the way Knowth is now open for visitors, but you have to visit both it and Newgrange from a new visitors centre on the other side of the Boyne River.....

Newgrange is amazing but there are always lots of tourists crammed in... if there is any way you can get into Knowth.... (next chamber grave along).. try that.. my hubby did it years ago........ you go in with torches... he still raves about it.

According to my book (Ireland the complete guide and road atlas.. published by appletree press)used to be several called "what to do in the North/ West/ etc of Ireland".... full of info and places you might not otherwise find... published in Belfast usually in any of the touristy shops or info places.

Hill of Tara, 6m (10km) South of Navan, 1m (1.5km) West of the N# Dublin to Navan Road, or catch number 20, 40, or 43 bus from Dublin or Navan (I'd check the numbers they may have changed).

"One of the most historic places in Ireland, former culture and religious capital. although only simple earthworks remain, it's worth walking to the top to sense the history and sample the stunning view."

according to my map if you head west from Drogheda to get to Newgrange, continue west to Slane, turn south onto the N2 you will come to the village of Ralrath at a cross roads and it's basically there on the R153 just W of the crossroads.

althought there are 2 "Hills of Tara" marked the other being slightly further west .. the one at the cross roads is the historic one.

seeing as you're already close by.. go to Monasterboice 5m (8km) NW of drogheda just off the main road (N1)to Dublin, it has some great Celtic crosses and a round tower in the church yard.

As someone suggested I take a look at Tara Hill when I will be at Newgrange (leaving Germany for Ireland tomorrow) can someone tell me exactly where Tara Hill is? I can't find it on my maps.
TIA,

Subject: Lyr Add: TARA HILL (from The Fureys)
From: DonMeixner
Date: 10 Dec 98 - 11:28 PM

Trish,

Here you go, I hope it was worth the wait.

TARA HILL, from "The Setting" by the Furey Bros.

Tara's on my mind, getting worse as time goes by,
I've got to make the time to see it once before I die,
The slow train has no bar on board, but that would make me cry,
For thinkin' of you, Tara, while I'm drunk enough to fly.

CHORUS: If you were a lass, you'd be my bride
And our love would be a treasure,
Ever would we fly, beneath an Irish sky.
If you were a dream, I'd stay asleep,
And if dreams were made to measure,
I'd be dreaming still, and I'd drink my fill,
Tonight on Tara Hill.

Men have died around you, for Kings and Queens and peers
But they left you as they found you, tho' your talked about____ ____?
Songs of love and bravery, songs of yesteryear,
But the songs about your beauty are the songs I'd love to hear.

Chorus twice

On Tara Hill, (repeat twice at end of song)

I think I have these mostly right, no thanks to Finbar the Great Enunciator.

Don

Trish,

Sorry, I'm a silversmith and have just been very busy building jewelry for Christmas. I promise I'll get them out in a day or too. Also I'm old, fat and slow.
