Great news Max! Actually I'm finding the process quite fascinating to watch. Take as much time as you need - not forgetting time for yourself and your family. I am one of many people here who really appreciate all the time and effort you put into Mudcat.

It appears to be back to 'normal'. I hope the new server helps a lot, although it's not going to magically fix connection problems. May it hold a million terrablytes, may its power source never fail, and may the deity of all things computerish bless all of its blinking, whirring, and quietly busy little bits. May Max and family be able to go out and not worry about re-booting every hour or so. May any/all responsible for Mudcat getting a new server and putting it on line get all the good things they wish for, plus a few extras.

Without the names to find any post you'd have to search through all the thread. While it's just the occasional odd-bod posting as unnamed GUEST, it's no more than an irritation - but this has demonstrated what a farce it would be if everyone did it.

Anyway, everything seems to be going like clockwork now. I haven't spotted if Max has introduced any changes in the course of repairs.

We upgraded to a new SQL Database version. 4x faster now. There must be some compatability issues because the data isn't displaying the same way. We're working through them today.

We have a new Database server and a new Web server so Mudcat should be much faster and much more reliable. No one is allowed to complain for a week now till we get all the bugs. If we have problems after that, then you can complain.

right--I see all members names just fine, but only blank space where it used to say 'guest'....I wonder if that is tech problem, or part of new management decision.

If this continues, regulars who post without cookies will have to sign thier posts....I don't know what anon guests will do.

MudGuard--I figured that out. That's why one of my posts has PM after it, and one doesn't. Actually, there is a PM link generated for GUEST, it just doesn't go anywhere. I notice these days though that I can click on a named guest and read other posts they've sent. As long as they follow the same name each time, anyway.

SRS, the PM link is only created for logged-in members.
If you were not logged in, the name you enter is preceded by GUEST - and no PM link will be generated.
If you were logged in, you could not enter your name as there is no input field for "From:" for logged-in members.

I sent that last post from a browser that doesn't have a Mudcat cookie, so even though I entered my name, the "PM" line didn't show up. But you're correct, the PM feature does link back to the sender if your cookie is intact.

I've actually been playing a little game with myself, trying to guess who the poster is by their writing style, on the ones that aren't signed, of course, and then clicking on the PM to see if I am right. It's surprising how many I have got right so far.

It seems to be doing much better for me than last night. Last night I could not open longer threads without suddenly getting 404 (page not found) in the middle of the thread opening. It was quite wierd, from the 404, it bounced me back to trying to open the thread - I think I could have left it for an hour or more just cycling though this on its own!

The best wild guess I can come up with is that someone had tried to put a timeout into the system. Whatever with that and names now dissapearing, it does appear that software changes have been made. Hopefully when completed, they will improve the stability of MC.

I sent Max and Jeff a note to tell them the "from" field is missing from messages. I hadn't noticed that the "PM" link was still working, Giok. that means the names of senders ARE being recorded, and will show up as soon as Max and Jeff make repairs.
Most astute of you to notice that, sir.
As far as I can tell, all other aspects of Mudcat are working fine.

Interesting that after yesterday's little hiatus [cue Clinton Hammond] none of the posts have who they are from, at the top. If people don't sign their post, just click on PM and when the page comes up you'll see who posted on the 'To' box.
