Subject: RE: The Chieftains in Canada From: GUEST Date: 29 Sep 04 - 10:58 AM Georege, yeah...very familiar with Allister's work...didnt know they were his kids though...most impressive...do you know if there are ties to fiddler Troy MacGillivray? He's a talented kid..he's coming my way with Pictou's Dave Gunning. I managed to get Dave some good spots to play throughout Sask in early Dec. It was unknown if my fiddle player would help him out, but Troy's coming along for the ride....should be good times!.....Slainte! |

Subject: RE: The Chieftains in Canada From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 28 Sep 04 - 05:49 PM No Reelbrew, I think they will be around still in 10 years, and probably longer. Can't say that it will be as the Cottars, but the kids themselves will still be working in the music field. Ciaran MacGillivray and his sister Fiona are the kids of Allister MacGillivray. If you don't recognize the name, think of Song For the Mira, Tie Me Down, Song for Peace, Song for the Sea, and a whole host of others. Allister wrote those and tons more. Ciaran looks like he'll follow in his father's footsteps. Not sure if he'll do stage work most of his life, but his musicianship is lovely to hear. Fiona's voice is to die for. The way I've put it is "She sings like someone who has been singing for 30 years", and she's just barely into her teens. The other two kids, Jimmy and Roseanne Mackenzie are also talented in other instruments from Fiona and Ciaran. Fiona plays the fiddle and quite well for her age, and Jimmy handles guitar and bodhran. My perception of the team is they'll work together as long as it's fun for them and will probably part amicably within another 5 or 6 years to work with other people or solo. It'll be worth listening for many years to come. |

Subject: RE: The Chieftains in Canada From: TS Date: 28 Sep 04 - 10:49 AM Obie, I like that about the Chieftains...to me nothing says "amazing musician" then a group who can make ANYTHING sound celtic...when you have the "played with" list the Chieftains have its incredible!...I've yet to hear the Cottars live but I've heard so much about them..are they the next big wave George or will they die out after they are done growing up?....Slainte! |

Subject: RE: The Chieftains in Canada From: GUEST,Obie Date: 27 Sep 04 - 04:31 PM Sorry, I hit the wrong button. I was late turning it on and missed the Cottars. This was no doubt the best set of the show. I didn't think that Arden or Blue rodeo blended with the Chieftains well at all. The Quebec stuff was better and the Inuit throat singing was interesting. I saw it before on Wayne Rosdad's show, but I'm not sure that it was the same performers. I like The Chieftains but I just can't understand the desire to jam with artists who perform a different type of music. It just dosen't work well for any of the performers. |

Subject: RE: The Chieftains in Canada From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 27 Sep 04 - 03:33 PM It was filmed in Halifax's Electropolis Studio around the end of May. Among the guest featured were Jann Arden, La Vent du Nord, the Cottars, and Blue Rodeo. Lots of great music. For those who live outside of Canada, I noticed that one of the sponsors of the show as A&E Network, so it might show up on that channel some time. |

Subject: The Chieftains in Canada From: TS Date: 27 Sep 04 - 11:07 AM Did anyone happen to catch the CBC special last night of the Chieftains in Canada? Wondering when it was filmed in Halifax...I only caught a bit before leaving the hotel from weekend gigs...wondering how the show was and who it profiled..I only saw Blue Rodeo.....Slàinte! |
