I was at rehearsal so I missed the "debate", except for hearing the last 20 minutes on the way home. Cheney did not explode (unfortunately). In fact, in what I heard, he was well organized, unflappable, articulate.

This brings up an interesting point. On an instant-reaction show I ran across, (I think it was on Fox), the commentator was saying how after the Thursday debate it was essential for the Bush campaign that Cheney show himself to be competent and logical, and that he had in fact shown that.

However. even this Fox commentator was not so rash as to suggest that George himself was competent. Very revealing.

Cheney may indeed be smart, but he would have been the GOP candidate for president last time around if he were at all electable.

He obviously has nothing but contempt for most of his fellow humans, viewing us as no more than patsies -- potential customers at best, cannon fodder at worst -- and it shows.

My wife Peggy quipped last night that Cheney is probably home in front of his mirror, practicing his warmest sneer. (Or did she steal that line from Letterman when I wasn't listening?)

Being "ten times smarter than Bush" doesn't necessarily mean being all that smart. The big thing going for Bush is he has demonstrated to his fellow citizens that almost all of them are quite smart enough to be President.

According to the Wall St. Journal today, Cheney is likely to make the argument that Kerry is "the first candidate since Walter Mondale to pledge to raise taxes if elected"

Sure do hope Cheney is so incredibly stupid as to say this---Edwards can blow him out of the water by pointing out that Kerry plans that only the $200,000-plus group should have to lose their tax rebate---then ask him just why somebody who makes $200,000 per year needs a tax rebate.
