Check out Artichoke Music in SE Portland, on Hawthorne I think. The host a Singer's Circle and are a really nice acoustic instrument shop.

It's not during Rapaire's visit, but I'd encourage any Portlandians to go hear Joe Hickerson's concert for the Portland Folklore Society on Friday, October 22. Joe's a wonderful performer of traditional songs, with loads of choruses to sing along on. Go to their website at Portland Folklore Society
to get the details. Joe is also doing a workshop at Artichoke Music at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday the 23rd. It's likely to be a rather entertaining and definitely informative romp through the annals of folksong collecting and archiving from the guy who spent 30 years as head of the Archive of Folk Culture at the Library of Congress.

Great, and thanks. I won't have a car, so I'm going to be pretty much limited to downtown and where ever public transportation goes. But I am certain sure that I can entice others -- especially if there's beer -- to trek along with me.

I'll bring two baseball caps -- a raspberry colored one from Craters of the Moon National Monument and a blue and khaki one with our Library's "M" logo in the front. If you see either stop around and say howdy and I'll buy you one.

Unfortunately, I have to fly back on Sunday morning.

for one thing it looks like there is a monday night song circle..
and i was in portland a while back and found a good vegetarian
cafe' not sure which/where now, but it is well known and has
interesting food which might appeal to omnivores as well...
wholesome foods using fresh ingredients and interesting
combinations. It was near the Aladin theatre, as i recall.
(ring a bell, anyone?)i think this must be it:
The popular, mainly vegetarian Paradox Palace Cafe, in the Belmont neighborhood, serves excellent vegan breakfasts and great lunch and dinner meals.
oh i see it is not completely veggie...
The Paradox Palace Café
3439 SE Belmont
503-232-7508
Hours: Monday to Wednesday 8 am to 9 pm
Thursday to Sunday 8 am to 10 pm
International. Mainly Vegetarian (about 90%). Vegan-friendly. Not pure vegetarian.
Menu: Has a large variety of vegetarian dishes. Sandwiches at cheap prices. Has breakfast meals with such dishes as Marinated Tofu, vegan French Toast and potatoes. Veggie burgers, salads, vegetarian Chili with Cornbread, veggie Lasagna, vegan Sloppy Joes, good bread, good Seitan Sandwich, Macaroni & Cheese and desserts. Vegan cookies and cakes. Barley coffee. Smoothies with yogurt or tofu.
Comments: Gets good recommendations. Relaxed, friendly, clean place. Good size portions. Popular with the locals; may have to wait for table. Interesting décor with treasure chests and urchin lamps. Good prices. The vegan burger may contain cheese.
Other Info: Full service, take-out. Non-smoking. Cash only; no credit cards. Price: $.
Directions: From I-5, take OR Hwy 99E Exit (#300B) towards Oregon City (US 26), then go east on SE Belmont St and this place is 1½ mile down.
i think this might be the best independant radio staion to tune in:
KBOO COMMUNITY RADIO--90.7fm Portland they can be found at www.kboo.fm
i hope you find what you are looking for there...

For beer you probably do want Biddy McGraw's. They usually have an Irish session going Sunday night. They are on Glisan, which is a major E-W street.

Do a Google search for PFS or Portland Folklore Society and you can find some contacts there. There is a Tom Rawsom house concert in Hood River Sat the 6th. I plan on attending but Portland should have plenty going.
Hood River is about an hour east of Portland on the Columbia River. Beatiful scenery. If you think you might want to trek out to Hood River, I'll give you more on my personal mail

I have a meeting in Portland, Oregon from November 2 until November 7. I'll be at the Hilton, downtown. Anything going on around there? Anyplace to go hear some music and/or drink some GOOD beer? Any 'Catters going to be around?
