All I can add (other than it is a great song) is from their 1965 notes: Sylvia adapted the 19th century Scottish tune.

Perhaps the fact that it is of Scottish origin may put someone else on the trail, though.

Hi! I learned this song from an Ian and Sylvia record umpty-ump years ago, and am about to sing it for the first time in public. Does anyone know anything about it?

"I'll bid my heart be still/ And check each struggling sigh/ And there's none e're shall know my soul's cherished woe/When the first tears of sorrow are dry."
