Subject: RE: BS: Uncle primatism-on the decline! From: GUEST,Mrr Date: 24 Mar 05 - 01:35 PM I loved Gerald Durrell! Thanks for the memories, Shanghaiceltic! I remember especially Rosie is my relative, when he goes to meet a relation at the train station (never having met her before) and she turns out to be an elephant. |

Subject: RE: BS: Uncle primatism-on the decline! From: Shanghaiceltic Date: 23 Mar 05 - 11:10 PM All these primates threads have remnded me of one of the books I read many years ago by Gerrald Durrel who founded the zoo in the Channel Islands. In one of his books (and I dont think it was 'My family and other animals') he desribes a friend in Africa house training a chimp. The chimp upset his owner by crapping on the living room floor. So the owner decided to slap it on the rear end and then pitch the young chimp out of the open bungalow windows evertime it crapped on the floor. It worked! After a period of time the chimp learnt to crap on the floor slap its own bum and throw itself out of the window. |

Subject: RE: BS: Uncle primatism-on the decline! From: GUEST,Mingulay at work Date: 23 Mar 05 - 11:56 AM I think Skipy's been hanging around his next door brewery too long. For him this is not very "playful". |

Subject: RE: BS: Uncle primatism-on the decline! From: Little Hawk Date: 22 Mar 05 - 07:27 PM Actually, the Uncle Jocko syndrome is a well-known one to primates. An Uncle Jocko is a primate who sucks up to human beings, jumps through hoops for them, and acts like a lovable goof for them just to please them and get ahead in life, thereby embarrassing and infuriating other primates. Uncle Jockos do all kinds of demeaning things, like wearing silly clothes and riding unicycles and posing for stupid "cute chimp" photos on greeting cards. I think that's what the thread title is referring to, in all probability. Rather than declining, my impression is that there are just as many Uncle Jockos around now as there ever were...although...maybe not as many as in the Golden Age of Hollywood movies, circa the 1940's & '50's. Some have called Bubbles an Uncle Jocko, but we won't know for sure till he testifies at Jacko's trial. |

Subject: RE: BS: Uncle primatism-on the decline! From: Mrrzy Date: 22 Mar 05 - 07:10 PM Yes, I've been very worried about the decline of uncle primatism, or parental primatism, and any other doubting of our shared animal ancestry with the other primates. The creationists are really getting me down, what are my kids going to learn in biology class, I wonder? |

Subject: RE: BS: Uncle primatism-on the decline! From: Layah Date: 22 Mar 05 - 06:00 PM I like that "playful mood" has quotes around it. As if it isn't really true. For a paper I'm supposedly writing I've been reading stuff about "language" in primates. The quotes means the person who write it doesn't believe they have language. So I assume your quotes means you don't actually beleive you're in a playful mood, just something that sort of looks like one. |
