Subject: RE: French Song, From: Ol Dad GAD Date: 17 Dec 98 - 07:34 AM Whups. Disregard the first message of the last few minutes. And I also forgot to add the four or five additional words I recalled: This part was in regard to the narrator having given the father a cake (or some bread?) earlier in the day: il a mange peut-etre oh-laddie-oh-laddie-ay avant de la tempete (Again, please forgive me the spellings...) Subject: RE: French Song, From: Ol Dad GAD Date: 17 Dec 98 - 07:32 AM Harald, many thanks, but that is not the song I recall. A little more sleep put a the "pattern" of the tune and a very few more of the words in my head: Line by line, the tune runs in a repetitive pattern (I think -- memory ain't Memorex): A A-prime B B-prime C D C-prime Where x-prime means "same words as x but different tune," and D is the "oh-laddie-oh-laddie-ay" line. The A and B lines share the same tune, as do the A-prime and B-prime lines, but have different words. The tune was appropriately minor. Kind regards, Ol' Dad GAD

Subject: RE: French Song, From: Harald Schmidt Date: 17 Dec 98 - 02:16 AM Hi Ol' Dad! I'm not sure, maybe you mean this one:
Le Chant Des Livrée
Ouvrez, Ouvrez la porte, Nanette ma jolie
Mon père est en chagrin
Ouvrez, Ouvrez la porte, Nanette ma jolie
Mon père est en chagrin
Ouvrez, Ouvrez la porte, Nanette ma jolie
Mon père est en chagrin
This song was recorded by a band from Bretonny called "Malicorne" in the 70th. I can send you a mp3 or a relaaudio-sample, if you want. HARALD |
Subject: Anyone Know This One? From: Date: 16 Dec 98 - 10:06 PM First of all, please forgive the spelling; my French has disimproved from mediocre to awful with the passage of time (a lot of time)... Quite a time ago I heard a song whose name I don't know, and I also don't know where I heard it. It was written from the point of view of a child whose father was lost at sea in a sudden gale, and it had a refrain that sounded something like, "o-laddie-o-laddie-ay." The only lyrics I recall had something to do with the father having perhaps had a chance to eat a cake the child had baked, "avant de la tempete" (and again, please forgive the spelling), and the last verse ending, "je regret toujours mon pere." Has anyone the words to this? I have a vague memory that it was on a tape or perhaps a commercial recording from Canada, but it was never mine and I don't know for certain. Hopefully, Ol' Dad GAD |
