Subject: RE: BS: Goatism - the one TRUE philosophy! From: Azizi Date: 22 Jun 05 - 06:13 PM One meaning of the pentacle is that it represents the 5 traditional manifestations of the Horned God - human, bull, ram, goat, stag. http://members.shaw.ca/bbogdan/blog_images/wicca/pentacle.htm **** Could "Goatism" be a code word for "Santeria"? Esmeralda knows... "Santeria is one of the many syncretic religions created in the New World. It is based on the West African religions brought to the new world by slaves imported to the Caribbean to work the sugar plantations. These slaves carried with them their own religious traditions, including a tradition of possession trance for communicating with the ancestors and deities, the use of animal sacrifice and the practice of sacred drumming and dance. Those slaves who landed in the Carribean, central and south America were nominally converted to Catholicism. However, they were able to preserve some of their traditions by fusing together various Dahomean, baKonga and Yoruban beliefs and rituals and by syncretizing these with elements from the surrounding Catholic culture. In Cuba this religious tradition has evolved into what we know today as Santería, the Way of the Saints. Today hundreds of thousands of Americans participate in this ancient religion. Some are fully committed priests and priestesses, others are "godchildren" or members of a particular house-tradition, many are clients seeking help with their everyday problems. Many are of Hispanic and Caribbean descent but as the religion moves out of the inner cities an into the suburbs a growing number are of African-American and European-American heritage. As the Ifa religion of Africa was recreated in the Americas it was transformed, today as it moves moves into mainstream America we can expect further tranformation." -snip- For more on Santerial, click HERE |

Subject: RE: BS: Goatism - the one TRUE philosophy! From: freda underhill Date: 22 Jun 05 - 06:02 PM April 12, 2004, http://atheism.about.com/b/a/078579.htm Goat Sacrifice Disturbs Neighbors Santeria is a widely misunderstood religion - so misunderstood, in fact, that it is common for people to file complaints about Santeria whenever they see evidence of it being practiced. The ritual killing of animals like goats and chickens is particularly disturbing to people and the source of quite a few police complaints, but fortunately the police don't do anything beyond checking things out and making sure about what is going on. Monica Hatcher writes for The Miami Herald: That Sunday, as she was again trimming branches, she caught a glimpse of a large white cross and heard singing -- ''mumblings'' -- and the clucking and crowing of a rooster. She also saw a severed goat's head on the neighbor's pool deck. ... 'I went to tell my husband about it all and he said, `They're probably going to have a sacrifice,' '' Weber said. But to Weber, a 14-year resident of the 15200 block of Northwest 88th Avenue., the unusual sights and sounds were more than part of an exotic and unfamiliar religion; they could mean illegal acts were being committed. 'When I saw the goat head, I said, `I'm calling the police,' '' Weber, 52, said. ... Two Miami Lakes police cars responded to Weber's call at 3:25 p.m. March 21, and officers questioned the owner of the home in the 8700 block of Northwest 153rd Ter. Santeria may be growing - because it is a secretive religion without a centralized hierarchy, reliable numbers are impossible to come by. How many followers exist and how active they really are is thus unknown - but evidence does suggest that their numbers are growing somewhat. That means that in some areas of the country, local religious majorities will have to get used to more animal sacrifices in their neighborhoods. What will they do? |
Subject: RE: BS: Goatism - the one TRUE philosophy! From: Azizi Date: 22 Jun 05 - 05:55 PM Hey Esmeralda, should I share with folks that "a Ram Goat" is Jamaican slang for a very virile man? Oh, they already know that? Ain't that somethin else! And when ska bands do uptempo remakes of "Mr Ram Goat" a traditional Jamaican folk song, the audience is bound to join in with lots of bleating and BAAAAA!, giving praises where praise is due. It's all good. It's all goat. Of course you already know that. |

Subject: RE: BS: Goatism - the one TRUE philosophy! From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 22 Jun 05 - 02:18 PM Yes, August is fast approaching! And we all know what August means, don't we? Yes! It's almost time for the Pelahatchie Goat But we'll leave it up to His Royal Majesty Khing khandu of Mississippi to fill in the details. I'd provide a link to the original PGF post over at Tweed's Blues but, sadly, it is no longer extant. But that's another story which you probably don't want to hear. |
