I was brought up in the bush with this song played frequently on the local radio station's request programme on Sunday afternoons. An old Scottish friend was very reluctant to give me the score to the tune, on the basis that Jean Redpath is quoted as saying something like "A drunk on stage with a walking stick (presumably Sir Harry Lauder)does not necessarily represent Scots culture". There's a great book called "Sing Out" which was put out by a senior citizens group in Toronto. It has alot of the oldtime music that would be enjoyed by the folks you are singing too. It's "Roaming in the Gloamin" My dad used to sing this. Actually, at 81 1/2 he still "entertains the old folks" at nursing homes with it and others. My mom has it on an old 78 record. I know the tune, but don't have it written down. could probably pick it out or ask Dad if he knows of a written version of the tune. let me know by email what would be helpful okay? I'm at [e-mail]

Of course, Carole, you do know that the absolute best folk songbook in the entire world is the Digital Tradition Folk Song Database, right here at the Mudcat Cafe.
If you prefer something printed on actual paper, I'd suggest a two-volume work called Jerry Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia, published by Hal Leonard, about $40 US. Smaller but more international is The International Book of Folk songs, by Norman Luboff and Win Stracke, about $15 US. both are readily available at the book merchants you'll find on our Help support the Mudcat page. I'll e-mail you the "Roamin" tune so you don't have to figure out MIDITXT or ABC your first time around.

Would like to get the actual notes to the theme. Have the words, but need the notes to the main theme. Play accordion in nursing homes and got several requests for this song. Also need recommendations of title of good fake book that would have old folk tunes from around the world.
