Subject: Lyr Add: ROAMIN' IN THE GLOAMIN' (Harry Lauder) From: Jim Dixon Date: 13 Oct 11 - 03:14 PM From the sheet music at the National Library of Australia: (There are only minor differences between this version and the one in DT.) ROAMIN' IN THE GLOAMIN' Words and music by Harry Lauder 1. I've seen lots o' bonnie lassies trav'llin' far and wide, But my heart is centred noo on bonnie Kate McBride; And altho' I'm no a chap that throws a word away, I'm surprised mysel' sometimes at a' I've got to say. CHORUS: Roamin' in the gloamin' on the bonnie banks o' Clyde, Roamin' in the gloamin' wae my lassie by my side, When the sun has gone to rest, that's the time that we love best. O, it's lovely roamin' in the gloamin'! 2. One nicht in the gloamin' we were trippin' side by side. I kissed her twice, and asked her once if she would be my bride. She was shy; so was I; we were baith the same; But I got brave and braver on the journey comin' hame. CHORUS 3. Last nicht efter strollin' we got hame at half-past nine. Sittin' at the kitchen fire, I asked her to be mine. When she promised, I got up and danced the Hielan' fling. I've just been at the jew'llers and I've picked a nice wee ring. CHORUS |

Subject: Tune Add: ROAMIN' IN THE GLOAMIN' From: John in Brisbane Date: 04 Oct 99 - 09:01 PM I was brought up in the bush with this song played frequently on the local radio station's request programme on Sunday afternoons. An old Scottish friend was very reluctant to give me the score to the tune, on the basis that Jean Redpath is quoted as saying something like "A drunk on stage with a walking stick (presumably Sir Harry Lauder)does not necessarily represent Scots culture". Here's the tune anyway, having noted that the DT refers to this song as @scots. Regards, John,

Subject: RE: Roamin in the Goamin From: Musicman Date: 30 Dec 98 - 02:37 AM There's a great book called "Sing Out" which was put out by a senior citizens group in Toronto. It has alot of the oldtime music that would be enjoyed by the folks you are singing too. I know, I use it alot. I gather from your email address that you are on the east coast of Canada, you have a great resource person there in Nfld, Frank Maher, at: fmaher@nfld.com. Tell him Paul sent you...... If I can help with any particular songs, let me know at: pevenden@vancouver.quik.com good singing. Ps, Frank's an accordian player extraordinaire, and I'm just learning. |

Subject: RE: Roamin in the Goamin From: katlaughing Date: 29 Dec 98 - 12:26 AM It's "Roaming in the Gloamin" My dad used to sing this. Actually, at 81 1/2 he still "entertains the old folks" at nursing homes with it and others. My mom has it on an old 78 record. I know the tune, but don't have it written down. could probably pick it out or ask Dad if he knows of a written version of the tune. let me know by email what would be helpful okay? I'm at katlaf@coffey.com |

Subject: RE: Roamin in the Gloamin From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Dec 98 - 06:19 PM Of course, Carole, you do know that the absolute best folk songbook in the entire world is the Digital Tradition Folk Song Database, right here at the Mudcat Cafe. If you prefer something printed on actual paper, I'd suggest a two-volume work called Jerry Silverman's Folk Song Encyclopedia, published by Hal Leonard, about $40 US. Smaller but more international is The International Book of Folk songs, by Norman Luboff and Win Stracke, about $15 US. both are readily available at the book merchants you'll find on our Help support the Mudcat page. I'll e-mail you the "Roamin" tune so you don't have to figure out MIDITXT or ABC your first time around. -Joe Offer- |

Subject: Roamin in the Goamin From: carole33@bellatlantic.net Date: 28 Dec 98 - 03:23 PM Would like to get the actual notes to the theme. Have the words, but need the notes to the main theme. Play accordion in nursing homes and got several requests for this song. Also need recommendations of title of good fake book that would have old folk tunes from around the world. |
