Being wrong doesn't make people evil, Richard. Anyway McC was not in any sense presenting Thatcher as an exemplar of virtue. Just pointing out that if even someone such as her was capable of doing right by an adversary worthy of respect, then Blair's selfishness was beyond excuse.

(Surely Peter Hain, who was under no obligation to say anything on this matter, has degenerated into one of the most odiously sycophantic politicians of recent times?)

I too was really sorry to hear of Robin Cook's death, which occurred not    too far from here. As someone said in an article I read in the week, along with Robin died any chance of the Labour Party returning to it's socialist roots. He was a man of intelligence, integrity, and political nouse, the only other high profile 'leftie' in the labour party now is that lapdog Prescott. He however should stick to doing the Churchill insurance adverts, and let other more able people get on with running this country. As for Robin Cook's private life it is none of my, or any other person on the forum's business, and commenting upon in it in a condolence thread is in extremely bad taste.

I said later that he was invited to present the prizes to winners of folk awards on BBC Radio 2 folk programme fronted by Mike Harding, the same year as Estelle Morris and Steven Fry I believe! (2004)?

Robin as is well documented became in my view a 'folk icon' by way of resigning from Government by way of his heart felt views on Iraq which can be viewed via the internet by usual prompt words.

If you wish to demote him from this part of thread then so be it

I don't like the 'Labour' party, but there were a few Labour Politions (Spelling) that I liked and Robin Cook was one of them, he stood up for his prisapills (Spelling), and I liked that, a person that stands up for what they believe in.

And here I was, waiting for news of Mo Mowlam's health! Still, I respected and perhaps admired Cook for his stance on the Iraq War. I had considerably less respect for his private life but I know there's never just one side that is at fault, and I remember some of his ex-wife's less impressive utterances.

He certainly is a loss to British politics. RIP, Robin Cook.

A fine centre-left politician in my opinion - one who combined radicalism, intelligence and honesty - a rare combination.

I have heard him speak a number of times over the years - not only was he a good speaker who got his points across very clearly and concisely but he was also very witty with a sharp sense of humour.

He will be sorely missed by the labour movement.
