Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: GUEST,suzi Date: 11 Aug 05 - 12:14 PM I think that when this list was drawn up someone somewhere forgot to mention that had the government not taken away our industries.... Hulls fishing Wales mining Middlesborough engineering Easington coal Salford docks That the above places were thriving and pleasant to work and live.. but alas less work.... things are bound to suffer. However the good things ie.. fishing, mining, have given us folkies plenty to sing about. suzi |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: Nick Date: 11 Aug 05 - 11:36 AM I think Peterhead is the worst place I have ever been so I am surprised to not see it in the top 10 - perhaps not enough people have been there to appreciate (?) it. We were on holiday years ago in the north east of Scotland and diverted to Peterhead for something to eat and somewhere to feed baby. The locals all looked strangely at me when I went for a pint and asked if I was there on business; then if I was lost; then if I was visiting someone. When I answered 'no' to all they ran out of ideas as to why I could possibly be there. The concept of going there as a holiday or in passing was a completely alien one to them - says something about a place. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: GUEST,noddy Date: 11 Aug 05 - 11:32 AM A rather obvious North/South divide. If its not London or near then its crap! As far as I am concerned the further North the better But have you ever been to.... no I had better not. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: GUEST,DB Date: 10 Aug 05 - 10:10 AM Is there any chance of getting Salford moved further up the list? |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 10 Aug 05 - 08:14 AM Completely wrong. Hull is Heaven in comparison with Gainsborough..... |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: Big Al Whittle Date: 10 Aug 05 - 08:12 AM a point overlooked is that you can't see the sea in Westminster, or Harrogate, and I bet their chip shops are crap |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: GUEST Date: 10 Aug 05 - 08:06 AM The main criteria was fish and chip shops, highly technical research, someone was probably paid many pounds for it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: fiddler Date: 10 Aug 05 - 08:02 AM From Hull and Halifax and Hell good lord deliver me - is a bit obvious, They have a good bridge (3rd longest Singel span in the world?)access to some brilliant contryside North and South so like Reading it is a nice easy place to get out of and so, enjoyable! Even if not for itself - was that part of the criteria? Andy |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: GUEST,muppitz at work Date: 10 Aug 05 - 07:23 AM Radio stations in Nottingham have been bombarded with the story of last night's programme, councellors have been ringing up in their dozens saying that channel 4 have got their facts wrong! I've live about 15 miles outside now, but I have lived in the city of Nottingham, I didn't see the programme but I'm struggling to believe that it's THAT bad! muppitz x |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: Dave Hanson Date: 10 Aug 05 - 07:01 AM It said Hull has got a lot of chip shops, I can live with that. eric |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: Hand-Pulled Boy Date: 10 Aug 05 - 06:50 AM It's very green in Hull. Everyone sea-sick from living near the coast and tidal rivers. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: GUEST Date: 10 Aug 05 - 04:18 AM They may not have looked to hard Hull parks & gardens |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: GUEST Date: 10 Aug 05 - 04:08 AM There are some terrific people and places in Hull, but lets keep that as our little secret. The programme was not about real life. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: greg stephens Date: 10 Aug 05 - 04:08 AM The criteria they used for judging were quite bizarre. The environment was one of the categories they scored points for, but this actually seemed to be based on statistics of how many hectars of piblic parks there were. So naturally the likes of Harrogate did rather well. Now, I like a nice park as well as the next man, but it's not the basis I use to describe an area's environmental standing. |

Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: gnomad Date: 10 Aug 05 - 04:03 AM Born Nottingham, raised in Hull, I've visited Harrogate enough to know I would need to be paid (well) to consider it as a place to live. Half the equation seemed to be whether you could find boutique shopping, a skinny latte and a whine bar while waiting for your over-achieving offspring to finish their after-school club ponyride. Not real life, but interesting. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: Paco Rabanne Date: 10 Aug 05 - 03:39 AM I am not surprised though. We watched the programme, and once Middlesborough was out of the way we knew we would top the list. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: greg stephens Date: 10 Aug 05 - 02:58 AM I can confirm that Harrogate would be great to go and sit in an armchair and learn to knit. Hull would a bit more fun though. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: GUEST,The Old Swan Date: 09 Aug 05 - 11:42 PM I think Harrogate was best. Sorry. Scruffy hotels and year-round geeky conference-goers; great except when you have to live there. |
|
Subject: RE: BS: Hull From: Dave Hanson Date: 09 Aug 05 - 09:38 PM I spent a fortnight in Hull one friday, waiting for a ship. Harogate was best and Hull was worst, both in Yorkshire, very odd. eric |
