Subject: RE: Boat Band on ITV Tonight(Maybe?) From: Andy Jackson Date: 16 Mar 06 - 04:08 PM As a long serving worker for regional TV - BBC South, it was always a haven of things that matter. We produced a programme of local folk music back in about 70. Black and white - local celebrities plus Jack Thakerey and Steve Race to give it credibilty, nothing has changed. The local press said something along the lines of " a breakthrough" and "out of the dark ages" never got shown again of course. Another of BBC South's Regional programmes " Midsummer at Christchurch" a film of the Christchurch Festival, is I believe in the EFDSS archives. Folk Brittania, nah nothing's new, just under researched, Happy viewing all, while it's still being made, Andy Andy |

Subject: RE: Boat Band on ITV Tonight(Maybe?) From: Dave Roberts Date: 16 Mar 06 - 03:52 PM ...and Granada had our old friend Fred 'The Weatherman' Talbot talking about the restoration of the Lancaster Canal (among other things) in a programme called 'Locks and Quays'. Plenty of boats but, alas, no Boat Band. I think we can all feel proud of ourselves for supporting the vanishing world of regional TV while everyone else watches 'EastEnders'. |

Subject: Boat Band on ITV Tonight(Maybe?) From: greg stephens Date: 16 Mar 06 - 01:44 PM Well, on waterworld tonight at 7.30PM there is an item on the launch of the rebuilt Shroppie flyboat Saturn. Now, I'm not sure if this is just central ITV or nationwide. Anyway, I'm credibly informed it is going to be on, and the Bat band were definitely there and being filmed. Mind you, the actual boat being launched is liable to feature more heavily than a fiddle and accordeon combo, but who knows. If you see a flashy saxophone outfit, thats not us, that's Davwe Hiett and the Weevils, upstaging us with their shiny instruments. But credit where credit's due, the star of the piece(which everyone should watch) is Saturn in all its magnificence. A complete rebuild by master wooden boatbuilder Malcolm Webster (also a fine 5-wtring banjo player). It took him three years I think. The paint job on the boat, immaculate as ever, by legendary folk-art historian Tony Lewery(also an excellent washboard player). In fact, a big chunk of the boat/music fraternity were there. A moment of canal history to savour, even if the Boat Band has ended on the cutting-room floor. |
