Subject: RE: BS: I Went To 'THE JOE' - GO RED WINGS!!! From: Cool Beans Date: 28 Mar 06 - 05:52 PM Yes, Mike Ilitch still owns the Tigers. This year they're supposed to be better. Go Wings! Go Pistons! Go Tigers! (The Lions are without hope.) As Joe Louis Arena is called the Joe, Comerica Park, where the Tigers play, is called the CoPa. Somebody cue Barry Manilow. And yeah, Texas, give us some advance notice next time. |

Subject: RE: BS: I Went To 'THE JOE' - GO RED WINGS!!! From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 28 Mar 06 - 01:03 PM Thanks, Maryanne - I'll let you all know when I go back up. I don't know if Mike Illich still owns the Detroit Tigers but it was no secret that he bought the Tigers from the Domino's Pizza guy Tom Monaghan. Rumor was that once the sale was made all of the "Domino's" signs at Tiger Stadium were taken down and immediately replaced with "Little Caesar's" signs. Cheers. |

Subject: RE: BS: I Went To 'THE JOE' - GO RED WINGS!!! From: maire-aine Date: 27 Mar 06 - 11:42 PM Hi, Joe. Olympia Stadium was on the west-side, at Grand River and McGraw. I grew up about 3 miles west of there. Olympia Productions is the entertainment/sports company headed by the Illich family who own Little Caesar's Pizza. They also have the Fox Theater and various other venues. Texas guest, let us know the next time you're in town. There are several 'catters in the area. Maryanne |

Subject: RE: BS: I Went To 'THE JOE' - GO RED WINGS!!! From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Mar 06 - 09:26 PM When I was a little kid in Detroit, I used to listen to Redwings games at night on the radio. This brings back great memories. I have to say that I don't know what "the Joe" is - does it have something to do with Joseph Campeau? Now I see - the arena is named after Joe Louis. It has "Olympia" in the name of the Website, though. I think I remember the Redwings playing at an arena called The Olympia, and I think it was located on Grand River Avenue. Can anybody correct my memories? Joe Offer, who left Detroit in 1958, at age 9- |

Subject: BS: I Went To 'THE JOE' - GO RED WINGS!!! From: GUEST,Texas Guest Date: 27 Mar 06 - 09:14 PM What a thrill! I booked several pubs and a coffeehouse in the Detroit area over the week of St. Patrick's and had great fun - although I was damned busy. I enjoy coming to the hometown because my dad and half my family still live up north and we all get to visit. My brother had tickets for a Piston's game on the Monday following St. Patricks Day and and that was great fun; however,I was scheduled to head back to Texas the next morning. On a whim I asked him on Sunday if he thought he could get a couple of tickets for Tuesday's Red Wing game at "The Joe" and he said he'd try - AND HE DID! The last time I saw a Wings game in Detroit was at the Olympia! I didn't realize that I'd never been to "The Joe." It was a great time despite the fact that we lost to the hapless Blue Jackets. I got to see the guys in person in the red uniforms (in Dallas their always in white) and that was just too cool. Compared to A2 Center in Dallas, "The Joe" is really a bare-bones arena; yet, probably considered a palace by many of the Soviets who came there to play. Dallas is far too glitzy, fancy-schmancy and big-hair - they seem to try and make the game more of a "show" rather than a sporting match. As for me - I'll take the latter. Oh, yeah, my sister and nieces and nephews insisted on taking me to dinner at Chris Chelio's restaurant, "Cheli's" - it was nice and the memorabilia is great if you're a hockey fan. Ah, but "THE JOE" - what a thrill!!! GO WINGS - BRING THE CUP BACK HOME TO HOCKEYTOWN!!! |
